I'm looking at the Maco v-58 and the v-5000, and the workman v-58. Not looking to run real big power. 500 or less. And just ssb on a Madison or Washington. Both with extra channels. Nothing fancy or new.

I can't comment on the Workman, but the Maco antennas are good. Since you're not planning on running a lot of wattage through the antenna, go with the V58. It's rated at 1,200 watts.

i agree with charlieB . the workman can be had for about $20 less than the maco 58 , but i dont know if the quality of materials and construction is the same . ive read some folks say theyre the same and ive read some that say the workman is inferrior in both materials and construction . i think the $20 difference is too little to chance getting an inferior antenna . gijoes sells an "sigma/alpha 5/8" for $80 plus S&H . but its not really a sigma style antenna it used a wire and ring tuning just like the maco , so im thinking its either a misslabeled/relabeled maco or workman 58 model . www.gijoesradioelectronics.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=744either way at least youre getting a whole antenna with elevated ground radials rather than just half an antenna like the 99's and 2000's that are just a verticle .
