A Maco Flat8 has only a 40 foot boom. Why are you going to 60 foot?

No reason,or benefit of going 60 foot!

I was told that the longer the boom and more elements will give you more gain to be able to talk further out. Thanks

I was told that the longer the boom and more elements will give you more gain to be able to talk further out. Thanks I too was under a similar impression! I too thought that the longer the boom the narrower the beam width and the better the gain figure would be for the same amount of elements vs a shorter boom and likewise shorter spacing again with the same amount of elements. I would assume that there is a point where the length would not justify the gain. You would probably be wise to find an antenna software program or calculator before diving head long into the project. Sniper Try this software. I just found it but have not tried it. Thank you Sniper........ I will look it over,,,, What did you end up with? did you go with the shorter boom, more elements? What I am wanting is more gain, plus a killer rejection,Right now I am talking off a Laser 400 ,Im really wanting a beam with side and back super rejection... 73's 07... from Winston Salem,NC

If you mean did I build an antenna, no I haven't that kind of room here in the city. I just run an old Astrobeam. I have a Moonraker and a Gizmotchy 4 that I will try this summer just to see if there is much difference over the Astrobeam. You have a very good antenna in the Laser 400 for sure. I know for sure of two of us that would like to have the room for one of those since we live in very low restricted areas, myself and Tombstone! I shouldn't speak for him,but the two of us have been trying to hook up for a couple years now and just can't quite do it. If I were living where I used to live, then I could experiment (and if I were younger...lol). Keep us posted in the future if you do build a longer boom, it sure would be interesting to see how it performs over what you already have. Merry Christmas .... Sniper

Ok!! I will let you know....I plan on doing this next spring,If gods will and everything else. Thanks for the software info....I also have a astrobeam that I was going to put up for my vertical side, over top of my flat side when I build it...astrobeams have great rejection just not that much forward db gain. But anyway! Thanks again for all your help, and I wish you and family a Very Merry Christmas!!!!!! 73's donnie...unit 07

I had a moonraker 4 (and still have it) as well as a "gizmo" beam and the Astrobeam actually has better rejection than both the moonraker and the "Gizmo". Im very pleased so far with my Astrobeam. At first i thought it was a clunker, but the problems i had with the swrs were my fault because i didnt have the boom to mast mount grounded to the mast pipe due to the pipe being painted. I removed the painted mast and used some galvanised conduit and the swrs dropped like a rock. and yes, the matching "pigtail" is very important to use. i tried to use the beam without the matching "pigtail" and it wouldnt tune worth a hill of beans. Overall, the Astrobeam is one heck of a great antenna in such a small package. IMHO none of the currently made 3 element beams have as much directivity and F/B as the astrobeam has. Its too bad its no longer made..........
