I have fished out my old CB and have set it up. I can hear people on some channels very well but they dont seem to hear me. My SWR is all over the place. Ch40 it hits 3 on FWD then 1 on REF Ch01 its flickering off 1 on both FWD & REF The strange thing is last night it was OK and even stranger... When I only have a short patch lead attached (no antenna), I still hear the same people I can hear when the antenna is plugged in. Sorry if this question is on the wrong board but Im new. Have I cooked the finals? Can anyone help? 73's Dodge

Sounds to me that everything is out of whack. First, I don't know if you've put up a new antenna or are using one that has been up for awhile. Could be that an old antenna is shorted or otherwise causing problems and a new one that is assembled improperly or otherwise not right somehow would cause a very low receive condition, I don't know what you're working with. Connecting your meter to a piece of coax from the radio with no antenna won't give you anything as far as a correct reading goes. If you've keyed up the radio with just a piece of coax connected to it with no antenna, there's a good chance that you've wasted the final and or final driver. If your meter is for checking SWR only the FWD position is used to set the meter up and then switch it to REF (reflect) to show the standing wave. If your meter measures power the FWD (forward) setting will show output wattage but all of this means nothing with no antenna. What you need to do is check the SWR with the antenna connected. If it's 3.1:1 or over that explains why you have low receive. Could be antenna problems then. Never try to run a radio with just a jumper connected to the antenna connector. A high SWR could be the result of shorted coax too. Sounds like you have everything wrong that can be, no offense intended. I probably confused you with all of this and I don't intend that either. Best I can help you. Good luck.

As mentioned above:
1) Old coaxial cable could be (and probably is) bad 2) Antenna could be bad
Let us know what your current setup is and we can help you out.
