I was reading the new issue of MT, and one article described the ccrane new am radio antenna, some device sits on top of radio , then the cable leads into the preamp which is variable with the variation knob, and then the cable goes to the antenna which sits on the windowsill, but the price was heavy $99, guess I will dream about it. DOCTOR/795 You can make a home made antenna that will blow their antenna away very cheaply. Go buy a big hula hoop at Wal-Mart or K-Mart, about 100 feet or more of 22 gauge stranded insulated wire at Radio Shack, and then find an old am radio with a large variable air capacitor or an old scrap CB tube amp with an air variable capacitor. You can also find the large air variable capacitors on Ebay and at hamfest. Wrap the insulated wired around the outer diameter of the hula hoop in a big multi-turn loop and tape it in to place with electrical tape. Now solder the two ends of the wire to the non-connected tabs on the air variable capacitor. Place the vertical standing or hanging hula-hoop antenna near your AM broadcast band radio and tune the variable capacitor until you hear the incoming signal strength of received signals go through the roof. The antenna is bi-directional so you can change the direction of signals received by rotating the hula-hoop antenna. You can experiment with different lengths of wire until you find the length that pulls in the strongest signal. The performance of the AM broadcast band loop antenna is quite impressive.
