I saw this. This likely has those 10V caps. At this price, you are at 60% of a Yaesu FT-950. You are even closer to lower end HF rigs.
Simply put, this is nuts. It is a 148 with a freq counter and power supply.

Less than an hour to the end of the auction and it's up to $760..... And the reserve has not yet been met! Yes this is a collectable, and yes it's a nice rig. But I'd never pay twice what the brand new retail price was back in the day, even if it's been untouched for 20 years. Caps dry out and other parts may still drift, so it's very likely that that radio may not work up to spec anyway......

Not for me, not at that price. I can't even imagine the bidding getting that high. The seller should contact the guy who bid the $760 and be done with it.

It did'nt sell for $760.00 so now it has been relisted.
For that price and cheaper, Icom 706 works and plays so much better!.
as for the 706MKII and 706MKIIG a simple filter mods and they play great on am as the original 706.
my 2 cents.

Nostalgia for a radio you had/wanted is one thing, but not for that kind of price.

If you go to the Breezeshooters hamfest in Butler PA next weekend, there is a guy there that will sell you one for $250.00 - and feel like a thief while he is selling it to you.
Last year, the guy had 3 of them and went home with all 3.

The last 2k i sold i got 300.00 out of it. It had two speakers and a desk mic so the price was ok. The 2k is an OK radio but NOT a great radio. There are better out there.

The last guy is pretty infamous with his "special" radios.

He has 100% feedback so i guess his customers are willing to pay a premium price.

I know, it's amazing. People must either buy into his BS and figure they have a rare radio (they'll be shocked when they try and sell it) or they just don't know any better.

Barnum was alleged to have said (but didn't actually)......... "There's a sucker born every minute". And EBay is just full of suckers eager to part with their cash for slick sounding adds. You'd be surprised at the things that go for ridiculous amounts of money, based on a catchy ad. The bottom line is that I should be cashing in on this, but I guess I'm just not that unscrupulous......

I can't recall that guy selling a radio that wasn't priced between $750-$1000. Everything he sells is like new, or a test mule. I should give him my MK III to consign. $800 easy

All are factory stock except for the reciever and transmitter being modded to more than 40 channels. If you look closely on some of the "never used" radios you can see dust and rub marks on the chassis where they have been cleaned............uh, I mean cleaned at.

It is amazing just how much inventory of Browning Labs equipment he was able to keep since they went out of business in 1979, isn't it?

Last year I attended an auction of a SK ham friend of mine.
He had a Browning MK III and a MK IV - which went for a whopping $300 - with a box of D-104 microphones.
Both radios had the expansion boards installed for 40 channels.
Knowing that - I would venture to say, I made a big mistake when I didn't buy them for $150 each.
The box of D 104 mic's had several mic's which has the wonderbar on the base and several were gold plated.
Before I came to this forum, I had no idea that they were worth anything, due to the fact that there is a lot better radio out there to be had then a 40 year old CB radio - even if all you wanted to talk was CB radio.
Even a Kenwood TS 2000 is 100 watts and able to produce studio quality audio - which in my opinion is more important then a cheap $15 noise toy which goes PING each time you leave off the mic. And a microphone that sounds like two tin cans on a string on SSB!

If you don't know much about Browning radios you can't compare them to a noise toy. I wish I could market a "noise toy" that would faithfully duplicate the sound of a Mark III. I would figure I could retire early as I do think it would sell pretty good. But it would still be a cheap imitation IMO.

You know what I mean Scott, or I think you do. A canned noise toy is always the same....a Browning squeal is always different. I mean, each to his own but as Glen would say "unique". BRanger??? Sounds like you might have been doing some "inbreeding" up there.

You know how us East Coast guys are, we are always trying something new and extreme. I like to give my tube radios a rest from the summer heat (meaning me), but by middle summer I miss my Browning go "ping". So I went out and got a Browning ping to put on my Ranger. It sits in it's own little cage with my echo. Then when everyone talks about their "BIG RADIOS" I fire up my BRanger!
Here is my ping - www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYWdfIrupbo&noredirect=1
