I have a Cobra 29, 23 channel, & a Cobra Cam 89 solid state base radio. They seem to have the same board, but the mobile has a Noise Blanke switch, & the base does not. Both have an ANL. . Why doesn't the Cam 89 have a NB? ...My other question is that the NB on the mobile does not real do anything. Are they all like this or is there an adjustment or part that needs replacing? Thanks!

The Camm 89 and the 29 do indeed use the same chassis. But check real closely and you might find some parts missing in the CAM 89 which probably correspond to the NB circuit. I've seen this done on a number of chassis. The NB was a "stuffing option" for the higher priced radios, but the basic chassis was the same. As to why the NB doesn't seem to work, it's likely that someone "aligned" the coils to it, thinking they might have been part of the receiver or transmit circuits. NB alignment is usually a bit tricky, as you need a pulse generator and a scope to do it properly. You can get close using a standard signal generator, as long as you know what the NB frequency is at, and just peak the coils for max signal.

Noise blankers really just help with impulse noise, such as that from an automobile. Some did nothing, but some were very effective. If a car parked outside my home with their engine running, the NB would limit their ( putt, putt, putt) noise drastically. If aligned correctly, they would do little in actually changing the characteristics of the receiver's audio quality or sensitivity, unlike that of regular noise limiters.

This Cam 89 has a great ANL! It really quiets things down. ;D
