For those that think you have LARGE beams hanging over your house, check this guys set up. www.smeter.net/7j4aal/antennas.php Now I would hate to have to pay for just the tower and the other tower used for the boom. Imagine a 138 foot long boom. Yikes. Not to mention the coax cost and the small block Chevy motor it must take to rotate that puppy. ;D

I think Night Ranger could build one out of wire...... ;D I bet he could! That's a hack of an antenna. I don't think the neighbors would appreciate that hanging over their yards if I had one here.

It's too much of a "good old boy" club on some frequencies, and in the summer it is too noisy. Those guys can be pretty rude to newcomers on "their frequency". On a similar note, I am already pondering my next antenna. I am considering an 8 element curtain array (HR 2/4/.5) or a 12 element curtain array (HR 3 /4/.5). The HR 2/4/.5 would be pointed towards Pennsylvania. The HR 3/4/.5 would be aimed at the west coast or possibly Europe or Australia/New Zealand. : ) Night Ranger

With the 180 ft tower boom and hang it in the air? I would have to say I doubt it. I understand and admit I don't know you so I'm not qualified even a little bit to say this BUT, I doubt it. A set up such as this has to be very expensive and require a lot of expensive equipment that's not available to people like me. If you can seriously build this set up and get it all working, my hat is off to you. Snobs are all over the ham bands. I meet most nights on 80mtr at 3975 and 3950 and these guys are lots of fun. I will admit a few guys are a little hard to warm up to. Regardless, build this monster get it working because I would love to hear your audio.

Only the horizontal elements themselves radiate. I would cut wire elements at the correct spacings and lengths and then use rope on each side to set the spacing between the elements. Then I would hang the ropes between distant trees with several support ropes coming off the side. The main disadvantage would be my wire beam would not be rotatable. If I wanted to change direction I would have to build a second wire beam, point it in the other desired direction and then switch between them. Below are my three Lazy H wire antennas that I switch between. I now have an even bigger wire antenna aimed west than the one shown in the video. My three Lazy H antennas www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvO_PnI9i7cand this is a video of me putting 100 watts in to one of the Lazy H antennas and coming in skip 600+ miles away at Sandbagger's house; Night Ranger using a home made Lazy H antenna coming in via skip www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0hyFuILvvI&feature=watch_responseNight Ranger

I think EagleIII mistakenly thought you meant building the tower and the horizontal beam as pictured in Japan.

I think EagleIII mistakenly thought you meant building the tower and the horizontal beam as pictured in Japan. That's correct. Build the same set up is what I understood.

I couldn't. My neighbors would freak. I wish I could, though.

The Beam antenna you saw in that picture - the Boom was Rohn 45 tower.
You have to take into consideration the wind speed rating for the neighborhood in which you build it.
My neighborhood is rated for maximum wind speed of 90 Moomphs MPH.
The antenna guy wires has to be able to handle the load, the wind load and the weight of all the people and things on the tower.
Now if you stop and think about it. A sheet of newspaper doesn't weigh anything. But take that sheet of newspaper and add a little clear lacquer to make it rigid and try to hold that piece of newspaper horizontal with a yard stick - the weight of a single piece of newspaper gets very heavy all of a sudden...

Other than that i stay away.... The same guys that are rude to newcomers will sit back night after night and lament how ham radio is a dieing hobby, and how their little group keeps getting smaller and smaller as they die off. They never seem to figure out the reason their group is getting smaller is because they keep running off the new blood. Night Ranger

I bet they are the same guys that think they know everything, with the exception of some simple manners of course!
