I have a Yaesu FT101EE that has a faded sticker on the main tuning dial that says "Wilson Electronics AM Filter Installed"
Anyone know if this mod is more than just a crystal and if so where it would be in the radio. I think there were a couple of ways to do the AM conversion on these.
I'll be looking for a new tuner dial insert and a stock cooling fan as it has a computer fan rigged to the back of it now.
Hope to get it on the air soon but noticed without having the 2100 amp yet, I need to jumper pins 1 & 2 on the female accessory plug jack.

If you open the top, and look right in the front center there should be a bord with a rectagular silver(could be dif color) round cornered box might be 2 they ar the filters.

The filter your looking for is on the left side. There should be 2 filters, the top 1 is the am. The bottom is ssb. Not all have 1 in the middle, it is for a speech processor. 238

Thanks for the replies. I removed the casing and found the Wilson AM filter on the left most vertical board as 238 stated.
It's labeled Wilson FC-6 3.18 MHz PN A6200 6KHz 7605 (last 4 being the date code I would assume)
I won't be needing a replacement tuning dial. The sticker that was on there peeled right off revealing a like new insert underneath. Sometimes stickers are good.

Make sure the mode selector has been rewired for that filter or it will NOT work..

Just put it on the antenna and switch between "AM" and "CW" modes.
If the pitch of the "hiss" noises from the speaker is lower on CW mode, you're good to go. You should hear the pitch of the noise become noticeably higher when you select AM.
If you do, it was installed correctly and you're probably good to go.
And if it's the opposite, with higher-pitched noise on CW mode, the installation job was only half done. The slot where the AM filter is mounted will be active in CW mode as the radio is shipped from the factory. The mode-selector modification is required to select that slot for AM mode instead. After this is done, the stock SSB filter iwll be in line with you select CW mode.

I'll check the CW/ AM noise comparison.
Noticed last time I had the bottom cover off there was a small brown wire snipped and taped from of one of the wafer switch leads. There was a small rectangular opening in the horizontal chassis sheet metal plate there from the factory almost like it was put there so you could easily cut this wire.
I have heard this radio work on AM over the air but I'm still in the learning curve on how to operate it properly myself. Just looking to make sure I understand the conversion and that it was done right. Thanks.

The brown wire placed a dead short across the driver tube's output coil on the 11-meter band. Served to make the radio "receive only" on 11 meters. Yaesu could only sell it legally in the USA if it would not transmit on the "11" band as shipped
Clipping the wire was the "modification" that would restore transmit capability to the 11-meter band. Just don't let one loose end of the cut wire brush against grounded chassis metal. Letting it short to ground is not healthy for the radio.

I don't have a lot of tech skill, but I did, remove the SSB filter, & replace it with an AM filter, & it worked graet! Side band rec was still decent enought for rag chewing. I still have the SSB filter, but sold the FT-101EE for 400.00 toa local super bowl, duck-plucker! (609, in slapdown county).
