For the past 3 weeks I have been talking all over the band from ch1 to ch40. Caught Night Ranger on 28 he sounded very good I have been running a 30 watt carrier at 100% 120 or so peak Get answered all the time it is all about conditions any operator that has been around can just tell by the signal coming in when to key and make it through. It is all about the timing.

It is all about the timing. I found a trick for getting my name called on a busy skip channel. I live on the East Coast of the U.S., so this discussion will be from that listening point. Lets say there is one guy with a monster signal coming in from the West Coast. He gets over top of everybody every time, and everyone on the East Coast is calling for him. When he transmits the stations on the East Coast shut up and start listening. Once he unkeys all the stations on the East Coast key down and try to step on each other to get back to him. What I do is make my call while he is transmitting. That way my competition on the East Coast is listening to him instead of trying to get over top of me. Since most of the people on the West Coast are too close to hear the guy with the monster signal his signal will not interfere with my signal coming in from the East Coast. I make my transmission short, so when I unkey there is still time for the other stations on the West Coast to come back to me before the guy with the monster signal keys down and steps on them. He he Night Ranger

First off, I'm not trying to make this a competition about your space limitations or whether you live in a rental!!! I'm not debating what you do with your clowns in Witchita...Great if you could key on them with half a watt with the antenna laying on the ground !!! I merely replied the way I did because you seemed offended by my talking about a big antenna and a big amp...my point was....WOW.... how awesome it would be to send tremendous power through a big antenna !!! You had to bring up to the board in my post what you could accomplish with you equipment in a braggish way...I'm not here to offend you are anyone else on this forum...you guys are good people it seems and I'm not trying to bring any discontent !!!

No offense Doc....you may be able to key on the big boys in Kansas, that's great !!! I used to key on them when I had my beam on a top section getting it ready for my main tower !!! Elements were 10' above the ground, your point is taken into consideration !!! If you wanted to talk 150miles down the road what good would that 2 element do??? you would be lucky to be heard on the other side of the neighborhood as low as that thing is....not trying to beat my chest or make a competition out of the 10 element idea, but with all do respect the money, work, and pain in the ass is coming out of my pocket...don't bash my idea or make a joke out of this !!! Relax... No one is telling you what to do, we have offered opinions on what you suggested you wanted to do. Whether or no you follow said advice is up to you. However, flying off the handle at well respected members will gain you no ground here. As I told Doc, no offense to him or anyone on this forum...I never implied anyone was telling me what to do and I do welcome all opinions, that's what a forum is about opinions, if you or anyone else doesn't like what I do with my money or my time simply don't say anything...But don't compare what you can or can't do because your not able to and because you don't like the idea of me running the type of equipment I choose to run !!! I didn't respond to Doc in the manner, my equipment was better because he lived in a rental ! He responded to me in that fashion in reply though !!! And last I'm not your kid and Doc aint my parent, I don't need earn yours or anyone elses' respect, I thought a forum was based on OPINIONS, not what you approve of me saying or respecting anyone else because of seniority !!!

Ok.lets cool our jets for a moment and go back to the start..No offense or criticism was meant towards your set-up in any way. Sorry if it seems that way..it sure wasn't the way I meant it. "Rental" was used only as a reference that I can't put my tower and associated hardware in the sky because of me now having a landlord and his preferences. It's clear that our philosophy on how we run our stations is different and thats just fine and ok....We are radio ops and we differ in the way we do things....no big deal..Keying on the "The big boy Knuckleheads" in Wichita is a running joke that has been going on for over 30 years between me and some of them. I used to live there. They key on everyone...Now that I'm retired and have moved to a vastly superior geographical location with a huge altitude advantage, they can't do anything to stop me from talking and I'm enjoying that advantage, believe me! As Walter Brennan used to say, "No brag, just fact!" I'm done now..

I to was in the same situation, spent most of my air time for at least 20 yrs with some sort of antenna in a tree !!! Now I'm kinda back in the same situation again except my antenna is on the roof !!! I dont transmit much because of my neighbors......all that will change soon enough when the purchase agreement goes through !!! I am blessed I got what I wanted, 5 acres no neighbors and a house on the bayou...I can put my boat in my back yard and go to Cuba if I wanted !!! I can;t make up my mind if I want rohn guyed tower or a self supporting tower with a big ole beam....My point is I've been waitin a long time for a decent station and got it,I wish everyone could have the station of their dreams.....I enjoy talkin with you guys and discussing /debating ideas, learning from yall hopefully yall can learn from me, but least of all having a falling out over who's idea is best or because someone's jealous !!! Thanks again and good luck with your station !!!

You asked for opinions, then you tell people to keep their opinions to themselves. If you don't want to hear others opinions, then don't ask for them.... it's that simple!

Thanks Ducks? Does it always have to come down to a contest of radiated power (whether from huge power or huge antenna gain or both), where someone just HAS to be stronger than everyone else? In my experience, people who are that infected with the "King of the Hill" syndrome tend not to have many friends, because most people are happy just having conversations, and they tend to lose patience for those guys who muscle their way around the channel like they are somehow entitled to some sort of recognition. This conversation started out well enough, but even then I had this gut feeling that it would go the way it did. Certain phrases were uttered which hinted at a narcissistic attitude waiting just below the surface. It's a shame really. We try to be an accommodating bunch. But some personality types just don't play well with the rest of the kiddies. Good luck with your plans to build that ultimate "duck squashing station". If your goal in life is to see how many people you can step on, rather than talk to, I can guarantee you won't be the most well respected person in your local area. We have a couple of people in my local area with similar attitudes, and they wonder why they are so universally disliked. They fail to see their own actions at the root of the problem.

When he said that on another thread the other day it was apparent he was obsessed with power! I have been a DX hound since about 1985. I enjoy busting the DX pile ups. To me using a 3cx3000a7 to bust the DX pile-up is like fishing with a stick of dynamite. I prefer to finesse my signal over the top with less power and an unusual antenna I designed and built myself. It gives me a sense of pride to make it in to the CRR with an S9 and S10 signal on an antenna I built and a 100 watt D&A Raider converted to 22jg6a tubes. Sure I could call up WizardBuilt and order some ridiculous high power amplifier, and I could call up Copper Electronics and order the biggest beam they have, but I would not take near as much pride in that set-up as I do with my homemade wire antennas, my rebuilt D&A amplifiers, and a vintage radio that I brought back to life and restored to working like new status. I also like using something that almost no one else is using, and I enjoy all the knowledge gained from building those unusual antennas and restoring those vintage tube amplifiers and vintage radios. There is one twisted part of my personality that motivates me. I get a kick out of watching an out of control CB bully realize I just got over him with a 100 watts and an antenna he has never even heard of. Wizzman in Pennsylvania told me two summers ago that Sandbagger would only hear me if no one else was talking, and that no matter how big an antenna I put up I would not be able to get over him. In the words of Bugs Bunny; "He don't know me very well". Below is the result of that challenge. Night Ranger in South Carolina steps on Wizzman in Pennsylvania from 700 miles away. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wr7HqLf63n4 ;D If you said I was obsessed with building the biggest antenna on the CB band I really could not argue with you. Who knows where I'll stop, but an eight or twelve element curtain array is not that far away from making it's first appearance on the CB band. I just have not finalized how many rows high and how many colum\ns wide to make it. Night Ranger P.S. For some reason I have to put a "\" in the middle of the word "colum\ns" or the forum puts an [IMAGE] mark in it.... Like this....colu .

Yep..and I get to talk to a group of nice and technically knowledgeable people in Pennsylvania like they were local for a few minutes here and there. The biggest selling point I have seen for the multi-element array antennas versus the single active element antennas is the multi-element curtain arrays have some serious listening power when it comes to pulling in skip signals. Both the lazy h and the six element curtain array pull in skip signals that my single element vertical and signal element dipole can't even begin to hear. Perhaps it is the increased surface area of four or six active elements versus only one active element in a dipole, yagi or quad. Night Ranger

You will probably find that certain skip conditions will favor that antenna far more than others. That antenna is probably best suited for "F" layer. It may not be as good for short hop "E" layer. But that's why we have variety. There's no such thing as "one size fits all" when it comes to antennas.

In real life testing the Lazy H and the six element curtain array are easily the best skip antennas I ever put up. The Lazy H excells at sporadic E and F layer skip, and the six element curtain array beats the Lazy H especially at long hall F layer skip (South Carolina to Hawaii). On other antennas I seldom heard Hawaii, and now not only do I hear them but stations in Hawaii routinely break for me. I never had that happen on my old Solarcon Max 2000 or my old Radio Shack .64 wave ground plane at 85 feet up. The odd thing is sometimes when I am having trouble getting over the DX pileup to a station in San Diego, California another station in Hawaii will start calling for me. Those shortwave broadcast station engineers that invented the HR curtain arrays knew what they were doing. Even the Russia Woodpecker used one.
