Mean 'ol Mr Murphy of catastophy fame has been following me around lately. Two smoked transformers this month, first my HF amp HV winding died. Then my B&W had a HV Xformer meltdown while warming up. Then last night during the early part of CRR my FireChicken 500 amp got way fuzzy. Now I am down to my RM Italy one tuber, this won't do..... So I kluged together all the 450 VDC caps I had in the 47uF range. She ain't pretty but I didn't spend any much needed money on more important Xformer rewinds. Seems to be back to normal power and audio clairity.

Looks like it might be time for something with just ONE BIG tube.

The shipping is a little slow since they are shipped out of China, but the price is nice. I purchased some of them. 12pcs,450V 100UF Axial Electrolytic Capacitor 18x39 NEW for US $36.37 That is about $3 per capacitor. I checked the Rubycon website and they do have a facility in China. www.ebay.com/itm/12pcs-450V-100UF-Axial-Electrolytic-Capacitor-18x39-NEW-/270505381890?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3efb609002Night Ranger

Yea I like playing with them also. But it is nice to have at least one very reliable unit that you can count on day to day. That is the way I feel about the DX300 I picked up from 2600 last year.

Well, Its not my only CB amp...Just the one I have had for going on 20+ years now. I sort of approach this amp the way I would back in high school. Anything I could find without cost to keep it going. Modified to run the 31LQ6 tube @ only $9.99ea w/ shipping. Has a nice kluge together appeal to it.Sure I couldspend money on it, but thats not the point. I also have my pair of 250th's amp for 1500 watts PEP but needs the right rig to drive it. I also have my RM Italy one tuber good for 100 PEP, sometimes not enough. The FireChicken is the right power to get out of the Volcano Crater with some distance.
I also have a 3-500Z box, but that is strictly my amatuer band amp. My two stations (amatuer and CB) and equipment do not mix with the exception of guest operators on my Kenwood remote station. 441 Spitfire, County Wide Radio.

But hopefully it won't head over my way....

Big tube amps are certainly far better for making big, dependable power, but it's wayback machine fun to play around with those old sweep tube boxes again.
