Not interested in drilling a hole in my Tahoe, regardless. I just want a good magnetic mount antenna that won't kill my Cobra 25, which has really LOUD with clean modulation and good ears. I have a K40 as well as a Wilson 500. My K40 was a trunk mount, but I can order one of their magnetic mounts to change it over for a few dollars. I prefer the K40 for one big reason, removing the antenna with just a twist to pull in the garage. Is there something out there I haven't seen that is any better than what I have ? Let me hear your thoughts/suggestions. 3's to you/yours, 555

Stick with the K40 and mag mount. Or a Wilson 1000. You do not need anything bigger unless you are going to run mega watts. I would keep the K40.

Let me hear your thoughts/suggestions. 3's to you/yours, 555 I can relate to your desire not to drill holes in a perfectly good vehicle. I usually try to come up with some other scheme to clamp an antenna to the car. Mag mounts are ok, they sure are a lot better than they were in the 70's. I have a K-40 mag mount and it worked great on my trucks in the past. The only real downside that I found was that I could burn carbon traces into the coil form with 200 watts or more, and that will cause the SWR to spike. The Wilson 1000 supposedly does not suffer the same issue. But if you are not planning on running higher power, the K-40 is a good choice.

Thank's Boss and KneeBiter, that was the info I was looking for. I went on the K40 site with a question about adding a Mag mount to my existing antenna. They make such a mount and I found on Amazon @ a better price. I have a small GL 100 that I may or may not try in the Tahoe. We don't travel that much anymore and most talking in on the base station. Again, thank's for the good info, this is a wonderful site. 3's to you/yours. 555

I run a mag mount Wilson 1000 antenna with a Stryker 497HP. That radio does about 70 watts. I have noticed that the vehicle paint dis-colors and pitting occurs under the magnet. I think this is due to RF capacitive coupling to the sheet metal when running some watts. The SWR match is fine. Since it's on the roof of my truck I don't much care, but this happened to my wife's jeep wrangler recently when I ran the same set up but with the antenna on the hood. (That's the only place on a jeep with some metal surface area) Also when she took the jeep to the car wash the attendant slid the mag mount antenna of the hood and scratched the hell out of it. I spent the next few days in the dog house even though I didn't do the deed

I've never noticed a paint discoloration/pitting when running mag mounts. I've run up to 200 watts (before smoking the K-40) carrier (750 watts PEP) and it never seemed to discolor the paint. But fine scratches from inadvertent movement is tough to avoid. Invest in rubbing compound......

Yeah, I've bubbled paint with magmounts and some small power. Did that on three different trucks using both a Wilson 1000 and 5000 and a small three pill amp.
I never knew what caused it until I finally put it together.

I think it all has to do with how long winded you are...I had some pretty long conversations on the road (ie. hours).

watch where you use a magnet mount antenna if your vehicle has a digital compass as it will screw it up

capacitive coupling has it's limits

capacitive coupling has it's limits Yes it does, and high power will test those.
