WOW..... I liked the Video ! I'll bet those Stores were NOT filled with Radios / Televisions ALL Manufactured Overseas, like today... It is getting to the point that I wonder WHAT IS made in the USA anymore Billions of Cellular Phones exist and NOT 1 Made in America.... Today, We have also become a Throw-Away Society... It quits and you throw it away and buy ANOTHER one... NOT much NEED for many Electronics Technicians any longer... When I was growing up in the 1960's, the TV Repairman made House Calls... I used to be astounded by His visits to the house... Carrying His Vacuum Tube Case... Up to His Elbows in the Back of the TV.... Holding a Mirror to view the TV Screen while he made Adjustments.... He had a rather Feminine looking Mirror I remember and even laughed the First Time I saw him use it... He turned Red-Faced and told me he stole it from his Wife, which made me laugh harder... When he was not available for Days, My Mother would then send me to the Corner Drugstore to have the Pharmacist TEST the Vacuum Tube on the Large Stand-Up "Self-Service" Tube Tester... The Pharmacist immediately STOPPED ME from using it on my First Visit there as I stood in front of it reading the Directions... LOL... Sometimes, Mom had me make 3,4, 5 trips back and forth to Test a Tube... I guess Mom didn't want me to break a Tube... OR she did not want to take a few of them out and NOT know WHERE to return them to in their Sockets The Good Olde Days... LOL.... WE were the last Family in the Neighborhood to get a Color TV ... I remember the First Time I ever watched a Color TV !!! Then, there was NO 24 Hour TV either.... The TV went OFF THE AIR at 11:00 PM I think it was.... Nothing but a Black Screen.....

Here's a newspaper clipping from October, 1976...

Ah yes, I remember when tube testers were a common fixture in many stores. While I don't recall the TV repairman coming to the house I do recall my father digging in the back of the set many times as well as several trips to the local TV repair shop, Smith's TV. Here's a newspaper clipping from October, 1976... I made many trips, as a child on my bike, with a bag full of TV tubes to test at the local drug store tube tester. Usually the weak tube would be identified and a replacement would bring the TV back to normal operation. I remember the biggest issue was the vertical hold refusing to "hold". Usually a weak vertical oscillator tube was the culprit. Similarly when the horizontal hold would wig out and refuse to settle down, the horizontal oscillator was at fault. It was panic time when replacing tubes didn't fix the problem because that meant the TV needed to be looked at by a "professional", which would end up costing a bit more money, than just a $1.50 tube. My very first full time job when I was a scant 18 years of age, was at a TV repair shop. I did mostly stereo and car radio work (and an occasional CB). But we made many house calls to service larger console TV's that were too big and heavy for customers to bring in. Depending on the TV, we would either toss it into the back of the van, or simply pull the chassis. We also got involved in TV antenna installation. I was paired with another guy and we did dozens of installations in the Lansdale area in the very early 80's. I got the monkey job of climbing the ladder and installing the antenna. The other guy did the interior wiring (I think my job was easier ) I can't believe just how carefree I was about climbing up and down ladders back then. I can't say that any more.......

For a while we had a TV that went out every now and again and then you'd go over to it and hit it on the side of the Console Cabinet... Back then, there was NO Remote Control for the TV either... There was an Antenna Rotor Control to Fine-Tune the Antenna in order to POSSIBLY Receive 3 or 4 Stations We had 1 TV in the Living Room... My how things have changed... LOL... Things are constantly changing... I noticed that a License to Repair Radios and Televisions is NO LONGER REQUIRED here in Massachusetts, since 2014... www.mass.gov/ocabr/licensee/dpl-boards/tv/Must have NOT been enough $$$ in it for the State, otherwise I suppose the Requirement would STILL be in effect

You should see they way people look at me when I try to explain that I get my TV over the air with an antenna. Most don't know it's still possible and many ask if I can get "cable channels", lol! We have 2 TV's, a newer one in the living room and the "older" flat screen was moved up to the master bedroom, and one that rarely gets used.

This guy could be the very last of the Radio Row businesses. Somewhere I have a jpg of their ad in a 1920s issue of QST. It moved to Brooklyn in the 60s when urban removal began on the lower east side. Not sure when the current owner, Richard bought it. Runs it pretty much solo now. Dropped in on the place a few years ago. Looks like the pictures on this Etsy page. www.etsy.com/shop/LeedsRadioHas a web site, too. leedsradio.com/The guy is an actual engineer and knows his stuff. Never had a problem with parts I have gotten from him. 73

Sorry, I looked quick at what a Mark II used and saw 3-500Z 's... At least SOMEONE is still Manufacturing 3-500Z Tubes... Of course China does, they seem to make all kinds of "Knock-Offs" of others' Products Surely not as good as Eimac Tubes, but something is better than nothing...

RF parts 3-500ZG tubes are probably the best currently out there. Risky buying NOS transmitter tubes nowadays.

I agree with the Risk involved... Unless you know the Source or Person that can be trusted and has a Amp in order to provide some Numbers... How much Drive... Which Band... How many Volts... How many Watts... Even then, NOT all Amateur Operators are honest As far as "Modified Plate Caps"... What's WRONG with this Picture www.diversifiedtool.com/Mikes/hyperplat-1393836651-12191.jpgI see them advertised on the Internet... I would have been more apt to NOT put a Picture like that on the Internet that shows a Fan blowing Horizontal Airflow, when the "Fins" are more suited for Vertical Airflow It appears they would be LESS Efficient used as shown in that Photo... As pictured, that Amp has NO Output either... LOL... I suppose the Parasitic Suppressors and Connections to the Plate Caps might have obscured the Photo of his Product a little, but it still makes me laugh... I also saw on EBay, available from Henry Radio, the "Horizontal Airflow" type modified Plate Caps of 3/8 of an Inch in Height, at almost TWICE the Price each compared to RF Parts' offering If one had a Friend who was a Machinist, might get Modified Plate Caps FREE , or possibly have the Stock ones altered by him

A larger heat sink is never a bad idea in my opinion. And if you cool the tubes correctly you force air up from under the tube for proper cooling, which would move air across the larger plate cap which should help with cooling. I know, I know; there are tons of high end amplifiers that don't force air up from under the tubes, but they also aren't driving the snot of the the tubes either. Actually found a video about those caps: www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoVCGFPvOukLooks pretty interesting to me. I would like to test them out myself.

Geeeezzzzz..... You can fool SOME of the People some of the time, BUT you can't fool ALL of the People all of the time... What's the Video prove Besides NOTHING... USE the PROPER Plate Cap for the Direction of the Airflow, PERIOD... There is a DIFFERENCE between Horizontal and Vertical Cooling Fins... His Video proves he HOPES People are not intelligent enough to know the difference I commented on his Video upon YouTube... You CANNOT compare Apples to Oranges... HIS VIDEO IS A DECEPTIVE COMPARISON ! Drake used the PROPER type Cooling Fins for the Airflow Direction www.w6kan.com/Inside.JPGKenwood used the PROPER type Cooling Fin for the Airflow Direction the-bandys.net/dave/amp/topinside.jpgHeathkit used the PROPER type Cooling Fins for the Airflow Direction thumbs.picclick.com/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/z/pTgAAOSwl9BWMizC/$/Heathkit-SB-220-Linear-Amplifier-Fully-Restored-and-Upgraded-_1.jpgTO BE EFFICIENT, THE AIR MUST FLOW THROUGH THE FINS ! I have NO problem with cooling in my SB 220... The Fan blows Air ABOVE and BELOW the Chassis Deck... Horizontal Airflow, as proven in Physics, will wrap-around a Cylindrical item and cool it completely around it's Circumference... I use the Amp on 11 Meter AM with the Switch on SSB and the Solder doesn't Drip-Out of the Tube Pins like People fear it will...

Eimac also got it RIGHT with their 3-500Z Tube Chimney Design, as at the Top of the Chimney, the Outside Diameter HAS TO be Smaller in Diameter, OTHERWISE the Air will not Flow through the Plate Cap efficiently... If the Diameter of the Chimney is the same at the Top and Bottom, the Air WILL NOT pass through the Plate Cap and Cool Efficiently... www.rfparts.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/99a5ad2c495df71db96a88d676e5ff23/s/k/sk406_1.jpgIn the Drake Photo in my previous Post, those Chimneys provide INEFFICIENT Cooling

Geeeezzzzz..... You can fool SOME of the People some of the time, BUT you can't fool ALL of the People all of the time... Wow, what got your panties in a bunch? Remember the times when radio people could have civil discussions? I do. And I thought this was a discussion. Loose the caps locks and the exclamation points. Its annoying and preachy. Most of us here have at least two days worth of radio theory under our belts; we can understand when you make a point. I deal with heat sinks all the time, both in radio and in IT, so I'm aware of how they work. The temperature crayon says the left one stayed cooler with the larger heat sink. Seems pretty conclusive to me. Would I use them? No, I don't drive my tubes that hard. I do like the look, I admit.

Why discredit yourself for his sake ? As I believe anyone would agree, You cannot compare Apples to Oranges. A comparison involves things that are alike. IF the HAM Videographer compared HIS Plate Cap to that of the Drake L4-B Plate Cap, that I provided a Link to the Photo of previously, there would be very little, if any, difference in Performance. Let him provide a Video comparison that I suggested he do, which he obviously would not, and THEN I would BELIEVE it... One chose to throw INSULTS at others, then He asks or demands, RESPECT NOT GOING TO HAPPEN RESPECT IS A TWO WAY STREET... NOT A ONE WAY !!!! Yes, admittedly I am NO Technician, as I consider those as having an Electronics Degree... Nor do I claim to be a Technician... But I am not stupid... You said it yourself... It is NOT Rocket Science Grumpy must be rolling in his Grave over what has become of HIS WEBSITE... R.I.P. Grumpy ! You are missed ! I am finished here, like so many others that decided to go elsewhere... It really is too bad that CBTricks does not accept New Members, otherwise others here, would not be... All the best to others here !!!

All the best to others here !!! I think you need to switch back to decaf...... A couple of points. I, and most of us here, have a sense of humor, hence the "expiring minds" comment. Yes, that was deliberate, and not a Clintonian slip. Cbrown did not insult anyone. I think you completely misread his initial comments, and blew them WAY out of proportion. I, like Grumpy, will not tolerate drama or users sniping at one another. There are way too many CB forums out there where juvenile back biting and name calling are the norm. We, on the other hand, are usually pretty laid-back, and try to treat everyone as we would like to be treated. There are very few disagreements here. Usually when there are, it's usually one person who can't deal with light hearted comments and feel personally insulted by them, or they completely misread something and jumped to a wrong conclusion. Occasionally there are a clash of opinions, and some who can't seem to accept that sometimes there is more than one way to skin a cat (or operate a radio). Hopefully, in cases like these, we can all be adults and take a step back, admit any wrong doing, shake hands (virtually), and move on. If you have a personal beef with someone, I STRONGLY suggest that you address it with them in a private message. That way the rest of the forum doesn't become a party to petty nonsense, and you won't have other people weighing in on your issue. I don't want to see anyone leave the forum over simple things. But, if you can't deal with differing opinions in the course of a discussion, then it might be the best option.

Okay, apparently I have insulted Triple Nickel. If I did in any way, I publicly apologize to him. No harm was intended in any of my posts. Not sure which post it was, but sometimes my humor doesn't come across well via the internet.
As for Bill, my comments still stand. If you can't be civil in a discussion, why bother with it? Why bother swearing on a public forum? Why insult others? And your private message to me seems to be in line with the last few public messages in this thread. I'm aware of your opinion of me.
I'm not going to drag this thread or the whole board down in the mud and argue back and forth. It certainly won't help the hobby and I don't have the time to waste.
