The 40 channel Royce 625 is a classy looking radio with the three green back-lighted meters. The model 625 was the upgrade from the 23 channel 624 in 1977. The top of line Royce three meter 40 channel CB was the 642 with SSB & AM. They are expensive and rare being priced at over $300. The Royce 625 is AM only. Quite a few CBers do not care for SSB. I am one of those AM only CBers. Most Royce base CB radios have one meter and are much more common.
The Royce 625 has a very sensitive receiver that measures less than .25 microvolts sensitivity. Some state the receivers are more noisy than some other radios, but it is just more sensitive raising the receive noise higher. Simply turn down the RF gain if too noisy. The receive is close (not quite as good) to the performance of the President Zachary. Besides the standard volume & squelch, the radio has delta receive tuning and a RF gain control. Noise blanker is also standard like most solid-state radios. The radios are also noted for producing the best sounding transmit audio and competes with the best high-end tube CB radios such as the Tram D201 in transmit clarity. The transmit modulation can be increased by adjusting VR1602 on the circuit board inside.
This 1977 radio is due to replace the capacitors on the circuit board, so it is best to be able to service yourself or a large rebuild cost will be forthcoming.
If you want one of these radios, the radio occasionally show up about every 3 to 4 weeks on eBay. The Royce 625 radios cost about $50 to $100 in good cosmetic condition.
