I have an issue with recieve being very quiet. Have to turn volume up almost all the way to hear. Also have a problem with mic gain. At 1 watt mic gain is just inder a quarter way up i can swing 28 watts but as i tirn it up power goes up but i lose modulation. Mic gain wide open is 18 watts with no swing at all. Is there something i can check that might be related to both of these issues?

The Cobra 2000 was made during the period of time where inferior quality electrolytic capacitors, mostly 10V rated, were used. When they fail they can go open or they can become leaky or shorted. Chances are you have one or more of these caps failing, and that's causing your reduced receive volume. As for the mic gain issue, that can be a related to the cap issue. But it also can be normal. When you have 1 watt of carrier, you need less modulation power to make 100% modulation, than you do at 4 or 5 watts. So when you turn up the power, it will require more audio gain to keep the same level of loudness.
