I have always heard the Mark 4 receiver was the same as the Mark 3 but having owned both the Mark 3 receive audio has more of a mellow bassy tone while my Mark 4 is more trebbly and high pitched sounding even with the tone control turned all the way to left. Are all Mark 4's like this or could there be something wrong in mine causing this? Also I have to crank the volume up quite a bit to hear anything.

Whenever a tube rig loses audio gain and the tone is "thin", I would suspect cathode bypass capacitors, or coupling caps.

Biggest difference I hear between a Mark 3 and Mark 4 would be the ANL. It's more severe, more harsh in the Mark 4A than in the Mark 3. Tone is about the same, but only with the cabinet in place. That alone makes a difference to the tone balance that you can hear.
A severe tone-balance difference probably has more to do with 45 year-old electrolytic caps than it does with model changes.
