Can anyone tell me what the heck a neon bulb audio mod is on a browning golden eagle? Someone on eBay is selling one with a neon bulb audio mod. What the heck is that? They claim it’s a limited edition from browning.

It's the special limited edition one only yellow table screw you mod. Don't believe anything that dude writes or says.

This particular mod will please a wattmeter, making it swing better with voice modulation.
But it won't please the ear of anyone listening to that transmitter. Introduces distortion.

It causes a sudden increase in the final tube's screen-grid current when voice peaks reach the bulb's threshold voltage. The bulb does nothing until the peak audio voltage gets above 90 Volts or so. The gas in the bulb will ionize, and cause the tube's screen-grid voltage to jump upwards. This boosts the tube's power gain in step, making an average-reading wattmeter swing upwards more vigorously as you speak.
This does unfriendly things to your voice waveform, and the distortion products it will add to your voice just don't sound all that good.

When properly done, asymmetrical modulation can improve loudness while retaining quality. But these quick and dirty mods aren't able to achieve the level of quality that should be desired.
