Tried a 12av7 in place of the 12au7 in a Golden Eagle transmitter. Nice improvement in audio. Any tube gurus here see a problem with this as far as potentially damaging anything in the transmitter? Thanks!

Only difference is in the gain factor. Any of the tubes in that twin-triode family can work, some better than others. The 12AV7, 12AY7, 12AT7,12AU7 are all wired the same, different mostly in the gain factor. I seem to remember trying a 12BH7 in that socket, but the result just wasn't impressive.
How a substitute will sound is a try-and-see proposition. Won't hurt the radio.
