Does this radio have to have a mic plugged in to receive ?

I'm just started to work on mine, so I haven't tested that yet. I'll give a conditional 'maybe'. One thing to look for is to make sure on the back of the radio there is a jumper bar between screws #1 and #2, which enables the internal speaker.
Let us know if you still have problems.

Jumper bar is there. I have had no luck finding out to wire a D104 to this radio.

Jumper bar is there. I have had no luck finding out to wire a D104 to this radio. That isn't a problem, but it does depend on the base type on the Astatic microphone. I'll give you all of them. Astatic G Stand (3 wires) Ring - White Tip - Red Sleeve - Shield Astatic TUG-8 Stand (4 wire) Set switch in base of microphone to R Ring - White Tip - Red Sleeve - Shield & Black Astatic TUP-9 or TUG-9 Stand (6 wire) Ring - White Tip - Red Sleeve - Shield & Blue Yellow & Black not used Hope that helps!!

No harm, no foul. The wiring info is now out there in case any other Astatic owners need it.
