Faulty solder connection?
A high percentage of "whack it and it comes back" problems are caused by soldering faults.

One way to find them is to have the case open and using the eraser side of a pencil, push gently on different parts of the circuit board while the radio is on and the failure happens to see if that brings back your receive. Be careful not to short across the metal part of the eraser.
