That is how I came up with the name "Grumpy's Olde Time Radio Forum". When I first got a computer in Jan.2002 I was surfing the net looking for stuff about CB Radios. I came across a few forums and they were OK, but most people were about big amps and export radios. Of course that wasn't my cup of tea so one night I was sitting at my desk with nothing to do so I did some research to find a forum host and well... here we are six years later. I have to say that Paul (2IR473) and Rich (Tombstone) have been my biggest suppoters from the very start. There were a few times I thought about shutting this forum down when I was sick and just plain tired of things. These two guys kept me going through it all and I owe much thanks to both of them. I have met some great people since I started this forum, and have made many life long friends. It kinda was like CB use to be in the old days, only over the net. And then came my buddy Dave (Sandbagger) with his great idea with the streaming audio server. Of course when he came up with the idea I was all for it. Maybe things are not what they were back in the early 70's, but I think most agree we are starting to have a lot of fun with this. Thanks to all who have stayed around all of these years and have pitched in to make this forum what it is today. It is really neat to go to some other forums and have this one mentioned from time to time when guys need info on Browning, Tram and other old tube type radios. There is no other forum like this one that I have found, and that has to do with all the many members here who love the classic radios. I can see the Classic Radio Roundup becomeing a very big hit as time goes on. Just wait till the skip cycle starts going. Your going to hear so many Browning, Trams and old tube radios strutting their stuff, the boys with their export toys will just sit back and wish their radios sounded that good ;D
I also want to mention that when the Classic Radio Roundup i going on, guys can jump in my chat room also. This is starting to pick up as well!!! I guess the moral of this story is: "If you build it, they will come". It's great to have a place where people who share a common interest can hang out and share war stories. Classic Radio Roundup was something that started a year or so ago and was pretty much just Pete (Spitfire) and myself playing around with old radios. A few other locals jumped into the ring, but it was not all that popular. But like many good ideas, this one just needed the right forum to expose it on. It's fortunate that there are so many forum members who live within feasible communications range. The streaming audio server allows those out of the area to at least hear some old stuff, and the chat room allows some feedback and comment exchange. I agree that enhanced DX conditions will add yet another dimension to the mix. Then it will be time for "Classic Amplifier Roundup" ;D The next step will probably be some sort of old fashioned face-to-face "Coffee Break", or maybe we develop a network of old CB radio enthuiests who might have connections to cheap parts, old CB dealers going belly up, radios in need of TLC, information and whatnot.

Hmmmmmmmmmm, you mean we aren't doing that now? Well *I'm* not. Not with my puny little solid state 30 watts. I guess I'll have to get cracking on rebuilding that Big Boomer I have down in the basement if I want to participate in Classic Amplifier Roundup. I guess I'm the odd man out here. I'll only get in trouble if I get a big amp.

;D Well, I mean there are times when there may be a Firebird F-500, or a Collins 30 L-1, or even a lowly Hygain Afterburner 482 At least they are classic tube amps, to add to the warmth of those classic tube radios ;D

But it doesn't do any more power than my little "brick" amp does.

Channel 16 LSB would be cool. ...15A (27.145) would be real quite.....Echo Charlie 3071 here! Echo Charlie 2632 right back...... Well, I certainly am up for an SSB 'Roundup, as I have a few good radio candidates. We could try channel 16, but there are some semi-locals that use 16 in the Allentown area that might get a bit miffed. We could do it right on 13 where the listeners expect us to be on Wednesday nights, and we'll be easy to find. Using 15"A" would certainly enhance distance opportunities (as long as my neighbor's kids aren't racing their RC cars), but with such a high profile activity such as C.R.R. I'm a little hesitant about using an unauthorized freq (Guys in the FCC might be CRR fans, but might not like illegal freqs. being used). That also limits my pool of capable radios as not all of them have opened clarifiers. I think what I'd like to do, if it's alright with the core group, is to stay on 13, and start off on AM, and then halfway through (around 9:00-ish), switch to SSB and see how it goes. If it works out, we could try a full blown SSB net the following week, or we can continue the half-AM/half-SSB each week that we feel like doing it.

Well I won't be able to do the SSB part on channel 13 here in my area as it is a big AM channel. This was the reason I wanted to try and do SSB and go to another channel. I like 16 or 17 myself. I also would like to see this done on another night beside Wednesday if possible. That way once the skip cycle starts running there isn't as much confusion switching from AM to SSB on the same night

A "Classic SSB Roundup" on a different night (and channel). Well, we can certainly put something together. If we were to do this, I would prefer if it happened on either a Friday or Saturday night, that way it could last a little longer, and I'm more likely to find free radio time (I have way too much on my plate through the rest of the week). We could try channel 16, and hopefully the guys in Allentown won't be too bothered. It's tempting to try the "usual" SSB channels (36-40), but most of my classics can't get there, and modifying them to do so, IMHO wrecks the originality of the radio. We can also give the SSB concept a trial run during the regular roundup on Wednesday. We could try moving channels up to 16 and see how it goes.

I am all for the SSB Roundup on a Friday or Saturday night. Channel 16 or 17 is great, if you go for 36 through 40 we will end up with alot of problems when the skip starts rolling. If there are guys on 16 we can always do 17, I have know problem with that!

Ch. 17 is a local Cape May, NJ AM freq. ....A lot of cussin'. My 2 cents worth....start out 1st hr am then 2nd hr ssb, when it grows add another night, heck add another night anyway. Friday or saturday ok w/ me. Have a couple good cannadates for ssb. Perfer staying in the 23 channel range. 13,16 or 17 here ok w/ me.

Wednesday night, we'll do the regular roundup for the first half on 13. Then at 9:00 we'll switch to 16 SSB and see who joins in then. If we get enough followers on 16, we'll start up something on say Friday night at 9:00 in a week or two. If the Friday SSB net takes off, we'll go back to straight AM on Wednesdays, so that those guys with AM-only classics don't feel left out. Any objections, alternate suggestions?

My suggestion would be to leave the Roundup the same on Wednesday and try the SSB version some Friday night in the next week or two. That way if someone on Wednesday night (after 9pm) joins in on the audio server they are not confused as to why everything is being transmitted using SSB instead of AM. Plus is someone is using a AM only rig for the first part they won't have to switch radios to do sideband version of the Roundup!
Just my opinion #cbop#

A dedicated group of classic CB radio enthusiasts from the Southeastern Pennsylvania area have set aside Wednesday nights from 8:00 to 10:00 Eastern Time, on Channel 13 for "Classic Radio Roundup", where we take the various pieces of our vintage 60's and 70's radio collections out for a spin. . Don't forget to tune in tonight at 8:00 PM EDT on Channel 13. Looks like I'll be running my Royce 640: I have no idea what the others will be pulling from their bag of tricks tonight, so we'll have to wait and see. Also, We'll be giving the "Classic SSB Radio Roundup" a shot this coming Saturday at 9:00 PM EDT on Channel 16 LSB. So put it on the calendar...... ;D

I think Al in Quakertown was in there earlier, running a Console V, and John from Sinking Spring came in with the Cobra 2000, but I was serving as a pillow to my basset hound, Daisy, so I couldn't move for a while and listened in on my Magnum 257 until I could fetch a classic off the shelf. I had a good time chatting with Dr. Hammer and Tinker53 in the chatroom too! ;D While most of us are not coordinated enough to talk and type at the same time, the more the merrier in the chatroom. Here is a picture of Daisy the hound checking out her daddy's newest classic, a Lafayette HE-45 6 meter AM transceiver with VFO ;D

Thanks!! It was fun for me as well. And listening was interesting, even though I didn't understand a lot of the radio talk. The really strange thing is, I could have sat here for a few more hours of it.
My wife said Daisy is a cutie....her words. ;D

The "really loud" guy was probably me. Since my streaming audio receiver is right next to my transmitter, I practically peg the meter, so I sound the strongest. It is a bit of an unfair comparison.

10-4. Wednesday night starting around 8pm eastern time is when you will find forum members running the classic (and not so classic) gear on Ch 13 in the Pennsylvania/New Jersey area. We will try a similar on-air get together on Saturday nights around 9 pm eastern, operating on Ch 16 lower sideband. As most of you know, 16 was the sideband channel standard back in the 23 ch. days, so it seems appropriate to run there now. Just for info (correct me if I'm wrong, Grumpy) but the Lancaster County PA Red Rose CB group (SSB Group? CB club? whatever they call themselves), does a SSB net on Ch. 16 LSB...Sunday nights? I don't remember, but Scott will correct me. So, local members may want to see if they can hear them, if they are still there. And of course, when the skip finally returns, we will be able to work each other directly. You may want to check out the the forum's Olde Timers CB Radio Club mysite.verizon.net/resrn4z4/ and get an OT number, so we can be set for the return of the skip. Many of you recall the days of working the CDX contests during the last solar cycle, and it made it easy to recognize those members, so listen for those OT (Olde Timer...oscar tango...whatever you prefer...) calls on the band. OT-8412 #cbop#

I have talked to him a few times on there, but that was over a year ago when I was much more active on the radio. It is channel 16 LSB!
