A dedicated group of classic CB radio enthusiasts from the Southeastern Pennsylvania area have set aside Wednesday nights from 8:00 to 10:00 Eastern Time, on Channel 13 for "Classic Radio Roundup", where we take the various pieces of our vintage 60's and 70's radio collections out for a spin. So if you're in earshot of Pottstown Pa, (which can be as far away as Wilmington Delaware, South Jersey, Allentown and Lancaster Pa.), fire up that old rig and give us a shout....... It's my favorite day of the week again. I'm always anxious to see what new classic rig might be heard during the roundup. This week, I'm planning on running my SBE Trinidad. I haven't had that one out for a ride in a while, so I'll see how it plays. See you at 8:00!

I have a pristine Trinidad, got it with the box and original packing/papers. I put four channels below ch1 in it and am using a Turner Plus Three mic. Everyone says it sounds better than my Browning Eagle! Wish I was closer to you guys.

Hopefully it was a one time anomaly..... That being said, those who did check in had an enjoyable time. Classic rigs participating this time: Cobra 98 (The "Bus") Pierce Simpson Simba Tram D201 Cobra 142 SBE Trinidad The SSB net is scheduled to go on at 9:00 on Saturday night. I have a family engagement which will likely mean that I won't be in there until later. But I will have the streaming audio set up before I go out.

I haven't been able to jump in on the past few roundups, due to a number of things going on...but they are positive things, like being called back to work after a 2 month layoff ;D and doing final preparations on the new shack. The Classic Radio Roundup has been a lot of fun for me, especially since Grumpy has made it a prominent feature of the forum. I have had fun playing with the few old radios I have here, and have welcomed the opportunity it has provided to get to know some forum members better. If I could make an observation regarding the roundup, I would say that the conversational aspects seem to have taken a back seat to a recent shotgun approach of getting people "checked in". I often joke about the numerous amateur radio "traffic nets" in which no one ever (and I mean ever!) has "traffic". These nets become a joke, with people checking in with nothing to say, other than to get "checked in" As the roundup has more people joining in, there seems to be less conversation, and more "checking in". I certainly like to hear the different people joining in, and it is fun to see what they are using, but I hope the "art" of conversation and on-air joking around, isn't lost in the "check ins". And don't forget to join us in the chatroom if you want. I have enjoyed some chatroom QSOs and antics in there during the roundup. Just my $.02. I am hopeful that I may be able to get in the SSB CRR this week...from my new radio shack. #glow#

Sorry but I won't be around much for the Roundup on Wednesday or Saturday. There is just to much going on here with the family to play with the radio or the internet. I'm sure once the skip cycle starts up it will become a big hit!

I agree with you that some of the classic appeal is to have the type of radio fun we had 30+ years ago. I was never a fan of formal nets and I certainly don't want to head down that path too far. I'd rather have free-form conversations loosely related to classic radios or some other aspect of old time CB. I'm also aware of those guys logged into the audio server, who want to hear these old rigs doing their thing, so I like to change mic's around just to give each of my rigs a different personality. I guess there's nothing wrong with "A/B" switching between a few old classics to give a fairer comparison either. However, with that being said, I think we needed to adopt a pseudo-net style in order to listen for and let in those guys farther out there who we may not hear in between quick keyups. I am also interested to see who's out there, what kind of classic rig they're running, and how far away they are. I'm also curious how they found the roundup (Word of mouth, listening to the channel, Grumpy's forum, my website, etc.). I know, I'll be the first to admit that when I get lost in a conversation, I tend to key up quickly and don't listen in-between keyups for more distant people. So I need to remind myself to take a break and give other guys a chance to get in there. I'm open for any ideas that might make things a bit more enjoyable for all involved. But all in all, it's still a ton of fun and I'm really surprised that some of the local knuckleheads haven't tried interfering with us yet. But there's still plenty of time for that.........

Ah yes, another fun CRR SSB Round-up. More fun with classics last night. I started off with my Regency CR123b, then because Sam wanted to run his D201, I couldn't let him be the only tuber on saturday night. I then switched to my Regency Imperial. That was fun drifting around, I should have warmed it up sooner. After that bit of fun I wound up on my "classic" President Jackson.
To add my .02 cents on Paul and Daves comment on "handling" the round-up. I agree its a fine line between a stuffed shirt "check-in" net and a CB free-for-all. I wan't to get everyone out there checked in as well as give everyone a chance to talk. I am also guilty of quick keying, but I think we all partake in that sin. I tell ya, its a real balancing act. It would be nice to fall back into the spuntainious chatter of CB of old. However there is a need to try and keep some semblance of order, so its fun for all.
Concerning the local jammers and jokers, I am also surprised they haven't messed with us more than they do. Last night one joker must have been bored. He tried to throw carriers, but we all know how effective that can be against SSB,not!.

He tried to throw carriers, but we all know how effective that can be against SSB,not!. Yea, last night was some typical CRR fun. Some of the same classic rigs heard on the AM roundup made their "other side" known. Tim's Simba and Superbase, your Imperial, CR-123 and CPI-2000. Paul's Console II also sounded good, as did some of the other guys rigs out there. I ran the TRC-451 simply to avoid relay chatter. I really need some free bench time to correct that problem for the future. There were a couple of sort spots. 201 was getting pounded by bleedover from guys near him on 17. And Al got some grief from one of the Allentown locals over using SSB on 16 (A bit of irony there). I don't hear those guys up that way all that well the way I have the beam pointed, but Al is closer to them than most of us are. Al handled the situation totally like a gentleman, but I felt bad that he had to back out and miss out on the fun. But I guess that's typical of the CB environment that we live in today. I'm just thankful that there haven't been more incidents.

I got in there early, but got sidetracked with some new hams on other bands and Echolink, around the time some people started complaining about bleedover and such. Not sure how that resolved itself, but when I jumped back in near 10pm EDT, in seemed calm.
The radios sounded good and I thought my Console II w/ Turner Super Sidekick sounded good on Spew Radio ;D
I got to check out the Console II on Ch. 36 USB with the VFO today, and it seems to be working well up there, so no need to align it

Well, according to the banner across the top of the forum, it is Wednesday, and time for another gathering of classic radios & classic operators, on Ch. 13. I will probably be in there, since the shack is up & running (still being refined, but on the air). I have put my Robyn T-123B, Lafayette Comstat 35 & SBE Console II w/ Siltronix Model 90 VFO in the shack, as permanant additions to the shack. If I had one more flat surface, the lafayette SSB-140 would have made it in there, but I am out of room, so it is on a shelf in a back room As I listen around the band, I have actually heard people talking about the roundup. The other night, the locals on ch.37 LSB were talking about old radios, and listing ones they had on the shelf, or owned at one time. I know this discussion was prompted by the CRR. Then, last night, I heard enhanced groundwave from the Harrisburg/York Pa. area, and they were discussing what nights those guys run their old radios I heard someone say Wed. & Sat nights. So I wonder to myself...what does this all mean? Are all theses people interested in old CB radios? Maybe...but I think it is the fact that there is a group of CB operators, who want to get together for an hour or two of fun on the air. No B.S., no droppin' da maul, no on-air fights, no judgement about whether your radio sounds good or bad, and all the usual CB crap...just a "run whacha brung" attitude, and everyone is welcome to participate. Go figure

Go figure Paul, I suspected for a long time that there were many old timers from the 60's and 70's who didn't completely give up on CB. Many moved to ham radio, but still had a special place in their memories for the place where they cut their radio teeth on CB. I'm sure many cringed in disgust listening to the increase in vulgarities, and the decrease in respect that started in the 80's and has exploded as time went on. I'm sure these guys thought they were alone or had a couple of friends that they could swap war stories with. But thanks to the global nature of the internet, these old timers are finding that they aren't alone. In fact there are a huge bunch of guys out there who would love nothing more than to to "do it up old school" with some of the old tube and early solid state stuff. I predict that there will be other CRR's springing up in different areas to better server the groups nearby. We can all try linking together when the DX rolls, or maybe a more 21st century internet solution might be feasible. As for tonight, I'll probably run my Midland 13-885. I haven't debuted that one on the roundup yet so......

Hopefully, if the DX is in tonight, it will be the Maiden voyage of my "new" TitanII....if not, then I'm confined to listening on the server and using the chatroom.....BUT....some Wednesday night there will be some favorable propagation....and the old Tram will reach out and touch the roundup!

Update: Daggone firewall @ work won't let me in the chat room. Drat, double drat!. I can still listen to the classics tonight on the streamer OK.

Another CRR on 25.115 last night. I had fun for the first hour, although I was struggling with an unrelated computer & radio issue in the shack, so I had to sneak off and focus on the problem, since I am selling that particular radio this morning. I got into the chat room towards the end and got to yack with Sandbagger, DrHammer and Tinker53 a bit, and that is always fun. I invite other members to jump into the chat room. This isn't one of those chat rooms you hear about on the news, with scam artists & sexual predators and such (well...the jury's still out on some of you ), this chat room is fun, with people participating in the roundup, even though they are mud ducks that can't make the trip from hundreds/thousands of miles away ;D Plus, you get to make fun of the people on the air, without them knowing it ;D I will be in there on Saturday night for the CRR SSB edition. I like using my Console II, and have one of those new little Dosy freq counters coming today, to help out with using the VFO on it. #cbop#

And that's also the excitement of it! It keeps you wondering!........"pant, pant"......"breathing heavy".... ;D Seriously folks, I don't have any classic radios.....yet. But hanging out in the chat room has a wealth of radio info from a few very experienced folks, and friendly as well. Its a different experience in the sense where you can hear the conversations on the radio and yap with the guys in the chat room about it. And then there's those other humorous comments. Good clean fun! Hell of a lot better than watching American Idol with the wife!

Well it was a fairly mellow CRR SSB edition on Saturday night, on ch. 16 LSB. The group included Enoch-SBE Console II Paul-SBE Console II Sam-Galaxy DX2547 Al-Galaxy DX2547 Tim-Pierce Simpson Simba & GE Super Base Dave-Realistic TRC-451 Not all classic radios, but definitely all classic operators. I have to imagine between all 6 of us, there are easily 180 combined years of on-air experience. Man, you guys are startin' to get old Al's Console V took a dump on the receive end, and Sam's Tram D-201 has some issues to be worked out, so those guys used their "backup" modern transceivers. I think Enoch was a first time visitor to the SSB roundup. I have known him for a few years, and he is a terrific person. He is a longtime CB and ham radio operator, and can be heard on 28.450 USB most evenings. If you have a ham license, listen for him there when the band opens. When I listen to the audio on Sandbagger's streaming audio, I am impressed with my Console II with the Turner Super Sidekick. This is one nice transceiver. I picked up a Siltronix VFO for it from DrHammer a few months back, and it works great up through ch 40. Earlier on Saturday evening, before the Roundup, I was listening to some guys on ch. 38 LSB from Elmer NJ., which is about 71 miles to my southeast. I was hearing them equally as well on the Console II as I was on my modern-day Galaxy DX-949 40 channel radio. Oh well, even though it was a laid back gathering, we still got to fire up some classics and keep the airwaves active.

Radio takes more of a back seat even for me (Yea, hard to believe I know), but I'll still try to make time for the roundups. Maybe next week, I'll try running the Royce 640 for the SSB roundup. This week's Wednesday night AM roundup looks to be a bit of the Clash of the Titans, as Pete is planning on running the Browning Mark IV and I'm going to fire up the Tram D201. So stay tuned......

That's Mopig. In one of the 1968 Hot Rod magazines they had a picture of a new Roadrunner and it said "Mopig, oink, oink" I immediately bought one and an Imperial too. wish I still had the Imperial. I might look for a nice one to keep factory once my rent rebate comes in.

Well the gauntlet has been thrown, so during tonight's CRR there will be a clash of the titans. An All-Tube, all classic clash of the top two rated CB radios: The Tram D201 and the Browning MK III. I will be switching alternately between the two of mine and soliciting opinions as to which one sounds best. To remove any preconceived bias, I will disable the ping on the Browning and not say which radio is which, just an "A/B" comparison. To add some additional spice to the mix, Pete will be running his Browning MK IV and switching to the Regency Imperial to make it even more interesting. There should be no doubt as to the topic of conversation tonight.........
