Just a reminder, Wednesday night is still rockin' with Classic Radio Roundup. It's been a little rough at times, but the tubes just keep on glowing.

Sandbagger, sounds like the Roundup is still doing pretty good and has been hanging in there for a long time now. Last evening was the Western Pennsylvania Whiskey Sideband net that I started five years ago as a spin off of the old East Coast Whiskey net on channel 36 LSB. We had about 35 check ins, conditions were good, check ins from North Carolina, I think two from Maine, a couple in Nova Scotia, and at least one from somewhere in Canada. I love these kinds of organizations that you and I have going except I haven't got streaming audio like you. Let's hope it lasts a lot longer. With the skip running I fired up my Thunderbolt and tried your advice. I turned the power down on my Galaxy DX2527 to 2 and 1/2 watts and peaked the amp. I got a nice clear signal and was putting out around 125 watts Peak Envelope Power. Radio on and have fun!

Tombstone Yea, the roundup is still going, despite some local jokers who don't hold the same set of values as we do. Sunday nights the roundup got moved to 10 meters where conditions are usually a little better. Last night we had one check-in from Georgia, but as DX conditions continue to improve, I would expect that there will be more check-ins. Good deal on the amp too. Yea, it's nice to have a ability to vary your drive power. That way you can keep it down below the point of saturation and the amp will love you for it.

Classic Radio Roundup will have a a little twist tonight. I will be conducting another of my infamous "shootouts" between two rigs. In the past, I've pitted Browning against Tram, and a 23 channel Cobra 139 against a 40 channel Cobra 139XLR. This time the theme is "Old vs. New" and I plan on setting a vintage Tram Titan against my newly acquired Galaxy DX 2547 to see which radio and technology performs the best and is the most pleasing to use.
Tune in tonight 8:00 PM Channel 13 or hit the streaming audio server........

I'll be at the ready at 8:00 PM on channel 13 just in case we have uncommon conditions, you never know. It's just that I'm at an awkward location distance wise with you guys. I can't get much of the streaming audio with this dial up connection. Maybe for a change I'll copy someone and try to get back with 100 watts??

Well, last night's roundup was interesting. I had my two rigs set up on an A/B switch and I used the same microphone on both. I started off using a Turner +3 desk mike, and the general consensus was that the Tram Titan was "warmer" and more pleasant sounding. I then went through my stable of desk mics. The Galaxy had more punch with the Turner +2 and was definitely louder on the D-104, but it also is a "brighter" sounding radio and guys who prefer that type of sound found that combination to be the best. Conversely the Turner Super Sidekick mated up best on the Galaxy to give the smoothest most natural sound. But the mic was a little too bassy for the Tram, which tended to sound the best on the +2.
I guess the lesson learned is that microphones do make a difference and there is no "one-size-fits-all" mic for all radios.
I also have to apologize to anyone who tried to check into the streaming audio. I didn't realize it, but the combination of the Tram and Galaxy along with my streamer's receiver caused a ground loop which resulted in a raucous hum in the streamer's audio feed. I didn't realize it until the roundup was half over. Once I realized it, I started unplugging radios, and when the Galaxy was unplugged the problem went away. The Galaxy's chassis floats so that's probably the reason.

I listened for a few minutes and didn't hear a thing. Then, just for the fun of it, I called CQ Roundup a few times between 8:20 and 8:30, no comebacks from anywhere but I really didn't expect any results but you never know if uncommon conditions are at play. This is about the fifth time I tried on Wednesday evenings. Maybe one of these times I'll get lucky?

Too far away to hear directly, and too close for skip. Although we have made it as far as south Jersey to Crazy Bob, and that was a 70+ mile trip How close are you to These Guys?

Not too far actually, I used to talk to groups in that area using both the omni and the beam. Back in those days the CB channels here were pretty crowded. I don't see me listed as being talked to, either.
It's possible we just missed each other.

I didn't know everyone on all the channels either. Although at times it seemed like I knew far more than I didn't know....... I like looking at CB tribute sites (That's probably why I made my own) and reading about the times that people had back then. A good collection of audio recordings makes it even better....

What is your web site? I'd love to take a look.
I actually probably still have recordings of the radio. I used a Teac A-3340 tape deck & a Tascam mixer for audio effects. I'd have to see if the tapes are still good.

I started the site in 2003 and slowly added stories and other stuff a little at a time. I'm still adding stuff. I have a couple of classic radio reviews to do, and maybe over the holiday I might get to one or two of them.... Classic radio roundup will be on tonight just like always. I haven't yet decided which radio I will run.

I listened for the Roundup again and as usual heard nothing, Sanbagger. I think making contact from here is fruitless. Cbrown, how far away from me are you? I'm 30 miles North West from Pittsburgh, Pa. Almost directly on the Pa/Ohio line.

Using 'as the crow flies' miles I'm about 303 miles from Pittsburgh. I have a dual 3-500ZG amp I can use to get out there with a signal, but I'd never hear you unless you had some major signal strength coming back at me.

I know just about where you are, cbrown. I don't have a chance at you or the roundup, Dang! I have much larger amps but they all need one thing or another so I'm stuck with my Thunderbolt peaking to 125 watts into an Antron splatter stick. Sandbagger, congrats on keeping the Roundup running so long. We just had our fifth (not booze) anniversary of the Whiskey Sideband Net. I would have never believed it. Carry on!

2/16/2011's Classic Radio Roundup was much more like it used to be with several more distant stations trying to check in. Crazy Bob was loud and proud and filling up my speaker with that Sonar FS-23. I don't know why he couldn't hear us though . Might have been a less than optimal receiver or a lot of noise and co-channel interference down his way, or just that conditions weren't there (Although they were good enough for us to hear him). We also had stations from Emmaus and Reading checking in. Everyone that I could hear was sounding real fine through the speaker of my Tram Titan IIa.......

Thanks, Dave. I was running the Sonar with the (large ) stock hand mic. into a Black Cat JB-12, then into a D&A 12 tube Phantom. My beam is a 4 element yagi. I did hear you but you seemed to come in in waves.

Thats the way CRR should run. Lots of locals checking in with radio talk. Quite a few checkins from out side the local area. Crazy Bob was sounding fine style, no problem hearing you. I started on my Shakespere 740 and switched to the Regency Imperial, for more audio punch. On the end of it all was the Firebird 500 and an old Alfa 5/8 GP.
