Pre Classic Radio Roundup video gate from Night Ranger's perspective in South Carolina. Recorded on January 9, 2013.
On the TRC-422a, the correct diodes to clip for modulation are d16 and d17. Note there is also a TRC-422 version with no "a". There may be only one diode to clip on the version without the "a" in the model number.

Yep... you sounded great on that Console II! I was listening last night and I thought to myself "Dave sounds awesome tonight". The only other radios I think compare that you use is the Browning Mark III and the Hy-Gain 623 for audio.
The Console II wasn't an easy radio to use if you lived in the city, the adjacent channel rejection sucked. The first one that I owned was in 1980, ran it with a D104, Glen 326G VFO and a Cushcraft Ringo. I talked all over the place with that setup with no amp. I honestly believe I talked more skip on that setup than any other I had using an amp with. The audio was some of the best I have ever heard from a solid state radio!

Not to take away at all from the SBE but my Titan has some of the best receive audio fidelity of any of my rigs. ...and you can see the 'S' meter!

I knew a few people who had Console II's back in the day, and they had a well-earned reputation for being a "bleed box". But every one of them sounded great. The best combination was that radio with a Turner +3. That's why I chose that combo. With so few close people on the radio in this day and age, you'd never know how loose the receiver was on those things. It actually works pretty good now.

This weeks addition to my ongoing Classic Radio Round Up video-gates. First half I am using a Regency Imperial II SSB,DSB,AM radio, low carrier and big audio! One of my favorites. Last two vids are the Metrotek Pacer bare bones CB with smooth audio that most really like. It has amazingly good receive fidelity too for such a simple radio.

Classic Radio Round Up for this week 10 APR13 features my Barker & Williamson 5100B transmitter and my Hallicrafters R274-D receiver. Things started out well. I had just replaced my HV transformer from a parts radio. My HV X-former died back in February. I was going to get it rewound, which I now need to do anyway, but found a parts rig. Well things were going well today with testing and all. Then you witness here another meltdown. I guess I'll need that rewind after all. I need to look real close, but there does not seem to be an immediate cause for the HV Xformer to die. Maybe just plain age? Two of 'em though? Need to find a reason. Final current was only @200ma. Hmmmm......

Hmmmm...... Boy, I hate it when I'm right..... I heard your last keyup which had dropped way down in signal, and when you didn't come back, I figured something melted down and you were either frantically trying to fix it, or were so pissed off that it happened that you didn't want to switch over to another radio to contiinue the roundup. Someone had speculated that you took a lightning strike, but since Doc Hammer was still there, I didn't think that had happened. But I'm not someone who believes in coincidences. You've had 3 power transformers go bad in as many months. In 40 years of playing radio, I've NEVER had a transformer go bad in anything. So what does this tell us? As for the B+W, it's possible that you have a bad or intermittently bad filter cap or some other component that occasionally decides to short out and that might be a culprit. But usually a fuse or a diode will pop out before the transformer cooks, especially if you catch it quickly. The age of the parts may be a factor too. Both transformers are equally old and would suffer the same sort of age related issues. But if you factor in the Heathkit amp with the 2 B+W transformers, I start to wonder about the stability of your electric service voltage. Since we were in the middle of a lightning storm, it wouldn't be a stretch to assume there were surges on the line. But that wouldn't account for the other 2 transformers going when they did. But I am still suspicious. You might want to see if you could monitor your line voltage for any spikes or abnormally high voltage conditions. Make sure your circuit grounds (especially your main neutral line) are tied hard to ground. At one time I had the neutral develop a resistance and my voltage on one side of the 220 circuit would sag and surge in response to load changes on the other side. Lights would dim and brighten when things like the refridgerator would kick on. I don't know what the answer is, but there's something funny going on, and you need to track it down.
