Well we had another great turnout! Had 16 checkin's Buffalo Bob Scooby Doo Hammerhead Renegade Copycat Leadfoot Rick Sandbagger Spitfire 1/4 Dave Hambone Pocket Change Ratman Bear No Streak Borderline Thanks for everyone that checked into SSB CRR! It was a good night for the SSB roundup. Skip was virtually non-existent, local conditions were decent (although they were shifting) and, at least in my case, the local noise level was lower than normal. Looks like that V-Quad is working for you as I had no trouble hearing you when you were pointed at me. It was a trifecta for me, as I also had a rare free night where I could play a little radio. I was pleased at how well my Midland 13-898B worked on SSB. Quiet receive and it seemed to drive the amps well enough to put some signal out there....

View AttachmentHad a great time with everyone on Thursday very active channel as can be heard on the video gate! Sandbagger you were coming down my way solid hopefully Spitfire can get his 8 pill box working on SSB. Get his signal up were it needs to be. As you can hear Thursday night Roundup is pretty popular down my way! And always good subjects brought up to talk about lol. I'm glad my V Quad is working ok so I didn't do all that work for nothing. It's always great having you guys in there because I know that I can't hear you guys on Wednesday. And with the Spew being down I depend on the Video Gate's to hear what going on CRR. I'm glad that the SSB Classic Radio Roundup took off like it did and people really enjoy using the SSB CH16 and look forward to it each week.

A Class C Comp box will never sound good on SSB unless it's re-bia$ed I have to chuckle when I see a SSB switch on them.

A Class C Comp box will never sound good on SSB unless it's re-bia$ed I have to chuckle when I see a SSB switch on them. The FatBoy that I'm running is class C amp and had the SSB switch added. That still needs the bias added to it. Now I hit that with the Galaxy 2547 or the Tram D201A and it runs clean on SSB. Not sure if Spitfire is going to have time to put that bias in the 8 pill box. Sparky I didn't hear you in there that night?

A SSB delay switch, without the necessary AB bias, is simply the amp builder trying to pawn off a "feature" for a few more $$$$$ on an unsuspecting customer, who will wonder why he sounds "rough around the edges" and will be told by all the non-technical locals to turn down the mic gain, or turn down the radio drive power, or maybe someone will posit that he's "off-frequency". Frustrated that he can't get it to sound right, he'll just run without the amp because everyone will tell him that it sounds clean that way........ Doh!

I was using a Galaxy desk mic with alittle reverb added. That Turner Super Sidekick sounded good on that Midland. Gave you a richer baser sound really nice mic's to run.

(Class C amp + Echo) x SSB = Bad JUJU Not sayin' it won't work, but just like Sandbagger is implying, I'm just trying to help folks prep for the Ham Universe if you ever decide to go down that path too That's why you'll never hear me on a Class C amp on side band (unless it's an emergency) Similar reason why I never free-band Oh, forgot to mention, I was out of town the last two Thursday nights. Avalon, NJ and D.C. respectively. Sorry I missed the show, but I'm glad you had a great turnout.

Yea, you sounding clean from what I could tell. Must have some sort of bias going on, otherwise it would sound raspy on voice peaks. Yes, the Turner Super Sidekick is a great mic for SSB use. Low end emphasized (or flat response) mics seem to sound better on SSB, the way most radios are set up. D-104's are usually too "bright" on SSB, unless the carrier oscillator is shifted to roll off the high end.

That's why you'll never hear me on a Class C amp on side band (unless it's an emergency) I even consider a Class C amplifier with an AM carrier 'bad juju'.

Don't think I would blend to there conversations to well. Most of the subjects we talk about on the CB radio would most definitely be flagged improper on the ham bands. Which is sad I understand keeping it clean I get that but always make it fun! And not having fun doing what you love doing is BAD juju!

And not having fun doing what you love doing is BAD juju! This really has nothing to do with ham radio, this is simply good engineering practice. Once upon a time, when I was a "youngun'", I had a lot of fun on CB radio trying to squeeze every little watt out of our setups, and clipping out modulation limiters and running trashy amplifiers. We got into channel wars with other groups who gave us grief for bleedover, and we had no clue that it really was our splattery radios and not their "inferior junk" radios with lousy adjacent channel rejection that was the root cause of the problem. You always knew who the guys were who ran amps because they all sounded fuzzy around the edges and tended to back swing when they talked. Now, I try to put out as clean of a signal as I can. No overmodulation, or overdrive and clean power. We still have a ton of fun talking about whatever crazy stuff we can. But at least we try to sound as good as we can while doing it. You can't tell by listening that my power level is 10db above the legal limit normally, because the amp is not overdriven and it's biased to not distort the modulation waveform. There's no fuzziness, or other distortion, nor is there any backswing (or excessive forward swing either). The FCC takes a very dim view of excessive power. But they don't have the manpower to effectively enforce the rules evenly everywhere. But they are far more likely to take notice of those who stand out as obvious power jockeys. It's far better to keep a lower profile. Ol' Zero-Five came very close to getting popped by the FCC because his antics started popping up on the radars of several different groups of people, and the FCC actually did get wind of it (I was informed by an OO friend of mine, who had the ear of the FCC as to the situation). Were it not for a lack of funding and Gene's untimely exit from the scene, he most likely would have gotten a visit.

I'm not big on dumpy audio and Balls to Wall wattage. Good audio is hard to beat and when you don't bleed five channels each way is even better. Now for tonight I think I'm going to run the Ranger 6900fsc4 so maybe we will hear you and Spitfire in there tonight. Buffalo Bob has a few HF rigs he wants to try out tonight so that should be fun.

I had another unexpected free Thursday night, so I ventured up to the shack to catch the SSB Roundup. I was surprised at the very light turnout. I ended up, for the first part of the night, trying to give a positive radio experience to 104 (Roach)'s 11 year old son (Centipede) who was operating the radio for the first time. He was a natural behind the mic, but I suspect dad was doing a lot of coaching. If the radio hobby (both CB and ham) is to stay alive, it will need young people to become interested. It warms my heart to see a youngster put down the smart phone and pick up a microphone...... Later on, Renegade showed up, and I think I heard what sounded like Stray Cat in there as well. It got a little more lively later on and even Tickle showed up to wave a hand. I had to duck out of there just past 9:30, so I don't know how many stopped in after that. But at least the SSB roundup is still hanging in there...... My radio of choice was a Realistic TRC-451, which has a nice quiet, and really sensitive SSB receiver.

Hopefully it will rain down on the low lying areas like where I am lol. We can only hope for good conditions to apply!

My youngest boy Clark and Centipede got to speak with each other on 16 LSB also. Thank you to all the operators that keep it relativity clean on the CB band. Not saying the kids are in there all the time. It's always good to hear the next generation on the air!

Rain will probably cancel softball practice, which means I'll be shanghaied into doing something else afterward.

I'm sure the other guys on the channel feel the same way. Personally I really didn't think the SSB Roundup would take off like it did, but I'm glad I took a chance, I think a lot people that stumble upon us are shocked that Cb's still use the Old 16 for SSB. But my hats off to you guys on CH13 for starting something that is really dear to a lot of people, them old time CB radios and really showing people that because something is old it still has a purpose. Yes CB radio is a dinosaur but it shows where we have come from as a hobby. And not to forget what made CB radio great in the first place.

No problems We came in late and Roach got introduced to Ram Rod. Ram Rod just put up a base antenna and sits at a good height above sea level just to the north of me. He's looking into getting a little help for his Cobra 2K so he's researching power supplies and the like. Mr Yaesu Musen FT-1000MP in the house...
