Another fine CRR in the log. Last nights affair was filled with E skip stations. My S meter never went below a 7. We had plenty of checkins both local and DX. I think we may have made a few new friends. I was advertizing Grumpy's forum and talking about glowing galss. I was using my Imperial, Also heard Fixr OT480, another long winded ping Browning MK IV from "East Tennesse" a Sonar FS 23, a Cobra 2000 and plenty of unknowns. I also heard Steel Magnolia in there briefly. We were told by one of her locals that she dresses everyone down throughout the week and goes to church on sunday.

As usual the idiot trying to play broadcast radio station up around the Great Lake States was coming in. It may be a 24/7 thing with him. He just plays some syndicated radio show that would normally appear on the AM broadcast band. I was able to null him out with the rotatable dipole, but still no C.R.R. coming in to South Carolina. We both could hear the clown in MI with the BC station and the good operator in WVA, but as Mr Murphy would have it, we couldn't hear each other. I love when propigation is good on 10/15/20 when you hear "backscatter" and can hear and work stations inside the skip zone, albiet weaker.

I don't know why,but I seem to remember previous summers, when the "E" skip starts, it almost exclusively south (especially Florida, which I could work on 6 meters with 1 watt), then as the season progresses, the skip seems to shift more toward the southwest, and midwest. I'm pretty sure this probably realtes to the position of the sun and/or the shift in weather patterns that usually occur when August hits.

I should hopefully make it next week, although I will have to make one more trip up to the lake to bring the whole shooting match home. It'll be either next week or the week after. Once that is all done, I should be back for the long haul. SNUBWAP net on Sunday night should be a go though.....

Classic Radio Roundup for 8/10/11 was a real blast. The E-skip took a break and we had beautiful laid-back-local conditions. I took advantage of it to run my Tram Titan with the Turner Super Sidekick mic, for that mellow, natural sounding tube modulation. We had several locals, including some who we hadn't heard in some time, check in. It would seem that the only civilized radio fun that goes on in my area anymore happens on Wednesday nights, so CRR is getting more popular again........
Farthest check-in was "Operator" from his mobile 25 miles away. Most of the rest were within 15 miles of my location.

CRR is still going strong. Our local group has actually expanded. There are 2 or three newer guys who have gotten bitten by the bug really hard.
Last night, we had a decent collection of classics show up for a good time. Next week, we may even get a local debut of a Demco Super Satellite..........

Tried to get in last night but DX was going the wrong way. Only had Hawaii and that was not that strong. But I will keep trying from the West side.

Tried to get in last night but DX was going the wrong way. Only had Hawaii and that was not that strong. But I will keep trying from the West side. Marc The F-Layer DX that we've been getting for the last several weeks tends to fade out once the sun sets. If you're on the west coast, 8:00 for us is only 5:00 and the sun is still up for you guys. So while you still have the F-Layer hanging on, it's pretty much gone from our area. The sharp drop in noise and heterodyne makes it a little better for the locals trying to get in during the roundup. The downside, of course, is that DX stations lose the opportunity to check-in. We seem to fair better when we get an E-layer event, and guys like Nightranger, Fixr, and DQRR come booming in. But E-layer rarely seems to carry signals west much beyond the Missisippi river (or they're lost under the much stronger stations from the south). But it's fun trying!

Speaking of Demco Super Satelite, here it is in all its glory. Its a long story how this rig came to be here. It is a local aquisition! Any way, when I got it a few days ago all it did was light up, NOTHING else. Ahh geezz. Not too bad actually. I basically re-tubed the radio. 17 total tubes ( I unbeliveably had all the tubes I need here on hand!) between the TX'r RX'r and modulator. After new tubes and an alighnment (he gave me the ORIGINAL manual with instructions and schematics!!!) the Dmeco is walking tall with smooth audio I am told. What a cool radio. It lives up to the hype. I still need to figure out why the modulator is not working, but I don't seem to need it. Check it out:

Looks good, but watch those old capacitors. You are sure right about that. It seems some of the caps were replaced in the not too distant past.... There are still some old wax caps in there. They are holding up for now. I do plan to replace all of them. I am making a list....For now though it is one talking radio. I fixed the modulator, and with it on or off the locals love the radio. As most of you know I own or have owned many of the classic radios we all remember, and a few we don't. Everyone says it is the best sounding radio I have ever run or they have heard, bar none. The Demco Super Satelite lives up to the hype!

The other night, when we were "road testing" the Demco, I thought it sounded "ok", but not as punchy as the Imperial. It may be a more natural sounding radio though.

I love the old Demco satelite Deluxe! .. Last night I shouted for the CCR, on my TRAM Titan IV. I heard a browning key up in the far distance, but that wa it because of local bleed. This forum kicks a**!

I was running my Browning last night, so you probably heard that......

I listened for the CRR on channel 13 last night, but the only skip running was from California, the North/West U.S. and south of the border. I have been hearing what may be sporadic E skip to Minnesota and Michigan this week. Tuesday night there was skip between South Carolina and Michigan. The guy that replays some radio talk show on channel 13 in the Great Lakes area was in there just like he was last summer. I'm glad I don't have to listen to him 24 hours a day.

Marc I haven't been leaving it up because during the day it's S9-heterodyne with skip noise, and that mess just grates on my nerves. I try to put it up during the evenings when the noise drops out and you can make out individual conversations again. And I try to leave it up over the weekend.

Hopefully you were one of the ones I saw logged into the audio server when we finally got going. Lot's of mic swapping going on last night....... And come to think of it, I left the audio server tuned to channel 13.......

If I can stay awake, I'll try to giveyou guys a shout on this old Midland 13-898B, that I got out of a trash heap! Someone converted the mic plug for Cobra/Uniden. The Audio is loud, the receive seems a little scratchy. I need to buy some more Deoxit spray!
