I suppose this really shouldn't be posted in the "Antenna" section, but I was in awe of the set-up in the pics, and it reminds me of my house too. The towers are gone, but I wonder if there's any evidence of the footer(s) hidden in that flower bed? Google street view 1124 S. University Ave Denver

I have a very vivid memory of climbing a tree in our front yard, single channel (channel 14) walkie talkie in hand, I was probably about 9 or 10 at the time. I was trying to make contact with anyone on Rt. 100 about 1/4 mile away, but no go. I remember TONS of skip though and wondering why I couldn't get a come back. I eventually upgraded to a 2 watt, 3 channel MacDonalds Instrument walkie talkie from Kmart then ran to Radio Shack for channel 19 crystals. That did the trick!

...There is a proposal currently on the board with Pottstown borough council for a 3 day "car show event" in September, similar to the big shows they have out in Carlisle, Pa. I'm watching this closely. I received the following email 20 minutes ago.... MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT: Tonight during a Pottstown Borough Council session, our 4-day car show was approved to progress! ‘Cruising Pottstown Summer Nationals 2014’ is anticipated to occur after Labor Day, beginning Thursday evening, September 4th with a 'kick-off party' near Smith Plaza. In addition to car show [details to follow] there will also be a Battle of the Bands and a Chili Cook-off! This will climax on Sunday with awards. Details to follow soon! Anyone interested in helping should contact me.
Best Regards, John Prutzman Co-Chair Pottstown S.C.O.R.E. Chapter 484.942.8062

During last night's roundup (3/05) it was mentioned that High Street in Pottstown was one of the top ten best cruising places in the country, back when it was still going on. So here's a tribute to High Street: If I could have back the gas money I spent running up and down High Street back in the day I'd be loaded! There is a proposal currently on the board with Pottstown borough council for a 3 day "car show event" in September, similar to the big shows they have out in Carlisle, Pa. I'm watching this closely. If you met someone on High Street you wanted to race it was out to the Stowe exit of Rt. 422 for some late night fun...

...Unfortunately, it's not a good business model for those who need jobs... Meh, every man for himself. I might have to wait a few days for that part, but it'll save me gas and I won't have to go out of the house in sweatpants.

It's tough to "go back" once you commit to a particular marketing strategy. For one thing, it would be an admission that they got it wrong, and the muckety-mucks who make these decisions would never allow their ego's to be tempered by such an admission. They sealed their fate when they decided to jump into the same pond with the likes of Best Buy and HH Greg, and other "big box" electronic stores. There's no way that RS could compete with the volume sales of the large chains. What made Radio Shack work in the past was its eclectic product offerings which appealed to radio, and electronic hobbyists. Unfortunately, there aren't too many of those around these days. But I would think they could have carried a diverse enough inventory of hobby-type products, from computer hardware, to electronic projects, parts, radios, digital devices, test equipment, high end audio and video etc., which would have attracted a fair amount of "technogeeks" to make a fair profit. But, as they say, hindsight is 20/20. At least they managed to outlive Lafayette by 30+ years. They knew exactly what they were doing (going to do) when they aired that Superbowl ad, and we assumed a bit too much thinking they might try to compete with Best Buy and the likes with brick and motor stores, it's far too late for that. My guess is that they're planning on a massive online presence with lots of advertising.

OH!! I see now, yeah AM MOD. That stands for " Adjustable Manual Mute On Demand" a.k.a. "squelch". Geesh Bagger, maybe you were absent that day?

Hands down my (almost) classic Galaxy Pluto. I purchased it new in 1992 and it's served both mobile and base station duties. It has all the features I could ask for, it's never "broken down" and aside from a couple of cold solder joints I've never had an issue with it. Darn thing even took a lightning hit and never skipped a beat. See just behind blue cap... Other radios have come and gone, but this one is a keeper. And with a date code of 10/91 we're under 3 years until it's an "official" classic.

... Of course, we're probably guilty too to some degree. Talking up "classic" radios and generating interest is what creates a demand. And increasing demand will cause prices to rise...... I was going to mention that. Look, you can't blame the seller for his asking price. He's just putting it out there to see if he gets any bites, and who knows, maybe he will. No harm, no foul. It's the guy who justifies that kind of cash for a CB radio you have to wonder about. BTW, same guy sold a Midland 3001 in similar condition for $168 + $19.40 shipping a few weeks back.

Isn't the term "modern classic" an oxymoron? Not at all. The technical definition of "classic" barely hints at the age of something.

I love it, but it's probably a bit "narrow" for the mainstream. Of course there are plenty nonsensical TV shows on the air, and hell, TLC will air just about anything. Maybe a "web based" show? I'd watch it, although I'm a nerd. PS. If it happens I have dibbs on a late 70's Trans Am EDIT: The whole TV show thing aside, maybe the occasional CRR cruise instead of a coffee break? Throw a classic radio in the daily driver, everyone meets and cruises to destination X for lunch/site-seeing then home again. Throw in a dash-cam or two for a video-gate of the event.

I have a minty example of the Kraco in the first ad. Seems it was a bit overpriced as compared to the G.E. unit.

I think that most "original owners" hang on to the bracket, power cord and maybe even the box. And I'd also bet that most vintage radios on eBay aren't being offered by the original owner and things have simply gone missing along the way.

I wanted this exact set-up badly, but was saddened at the surface mount componentry and lack of mods so I went with the Cobra 29LX.
The thought of using the wireless mic with other radios never crossed my mind though. Hmm...

Holy ancient thread Batman! I was going to post the RS catalogs today, but I used the search function first and found someone had beaten me to it, years ago. At any rate I didn't get much done at work this afternoon. ;D Love looking at the old rigs, stereos, radios, toys, games, kits, etc. Brings back so many memories.

He's the guy who has an affinity for 206, and he keeps asking for $50 from him, if I remember correctly. I don't know what this guy's deal is, but it's best to treat him like any other malcontent, and to just ignore them. Hello gentlemen. I wondered what ever happened to that guy. For the record it was " Oh 206, where's my fifty bucks?" My guess was (and still is now) that this was/is a driver who worked for a local company, but never got into talking with the locals, not unless he was really good at keeping it "on the down low". And apparently may have had a bad transaction with 206. He was also known for such phases as... "Turkey gravy" and "Sunday, Monday, Tuesday Wednesday"
