i just picked up a tram 27e. i have to say it is a really enjoyable radio to use, all the locals like the audio a lot and the receive is really good, to bad they dont make big metal tube radios like this one any more, nothing like tube vintage gear!,,,,,,,, jimbo

it is a very nice radio, i already traded it and some cash for a ranger 2995dx, this radio is awsome. has the same rca jack on the back, and it is for a recorder. the radio is only a couple of months old, i really couldnt afford to buy it outright at around 600.00 dollars, had to do some wheelin dealin and slowly build up to it with some radio trading, gonna keep this one, it has a switch on the back to shut off the internal amp, so i can use external one, it screams with audio with the internal and external amps, fan on the back and really sensitive receive. , jimbo

the lafayettes are reliable work horses, just like any panasonic chassis, lift the hood all are very similar, i have had good luck with them. the daks are nice to look at! i have had 2 and you never know if they are going to work every time you turn them on, they have a reputation for this. built in korea, cold solder joint problems, e.t.c. ,, jimbo

just purchased a very nice looking sonar fs-2340 off off of e-pay. the pics and description of it shows it should be a very nice radio, have been wanting one for a while, always liked the construction of the sonar radios, i sold a model g earlier this year with the external meter, ( wish i hadnt) . now if the shipping dosent do ant damage, and everything is as described i should enjoy it when it arrives, got to love those tube radios,,,,,,,,,,,, jimbo

i just picked up a hallicrafters cb3a, i have a few of them. this one has the meters and noise blanker control , those were optional on these radios, my other 2 dont have them and from vintage advertisements i have seen them sold as optional. the biggest thing on this radio that i have never seen before is that it has a box screwed to the outsid cover with a screen cover that houses 2 tubes, a 6al5 and a 12ax7, hallicrafters branded tubes. i havent powered the radio up yet as i am going to use a variac and bring up the power slowly. i am wondering what the 2 external tubes do, maybe a modulator? has anyone ever seen this before? jimbo

yes the radio has a copper chassis and the face is clean, i got it off ebay 3 years ago, storie was that it came out of a cb shop and was used to test monitor cb radios, i dont know if the storie was true but i will say for a 1965 radio it is immaculate. i guess i didnt do to bad with the receive alignment by ear as i had it on last night and it received every bit as good as my cobra 2000 and i got good audio reports. its a keeper,,,,,, jimbo

any help on the eico would be apreciated, thanks,,,,,,, jim

i have had the mfj 108 whip antenna for a couple of weeks now on the back of my wrangler, i do like it, i guess i am a little ocd about the bending, last week end i cut up a old marine base antenna and removed the inside wire antenna, cut a 3 foot piece, slid it over the whip down over the bottom ferrule and attached a rubber cap off the marine antenna to seal out water, i sliced the bottom of the fiberglass pole so it would slide tightly over the bottom of the whip then hose clamped it. it bends now just enough when hitting limbs, but stays pretty straight at 70 miles an hour down the highway, looks good to. it dosent bend near as much as the radio shack 102 whip with out doing anything and probably everyone one who got one would be happy with it, jim jimbo new jersey

i would definatley power it up slowly with a variac, i have slowly over a couple of days powered up old tube radios after i have cleaned them up, including tube pins and sockets, all the pots, volume squelch, e.t.c, blow everything out lightly with compressed air then hook up to a variac and 10 volts at a time every few hours for however long it takes, see if its operational, then see if you like it, and if you do start replacing capicators, and any resistors that are out of tolerance, a lot of times the crystals in these old radios have drifted from age , use, e.t.c sometimes its a lot of work bringing back to life these old tube rigs, make sure you like it before you start,,,,,,,, jim

i recently just sold a couple of the rainge gains, blue cases with a couple of red smaller knobs on the front. they throw a lower carrier double sideband and a louder modulation, typically only a couple of watts carrier, they are made that way, on the sides are load and tune controls , modulation, antenna load, there are holes in the cover to put a small screwdriver in to tune, they are definately a different kind of radio concentrating modulation on the sidebands, but not a sideband radio. i believe this was a concept tried by a few radio companies in the sixties to achieve loud modulation. i will look to see if i can find a manual, you should have one for this radio to operate, like i said they are different. jim

well i received the mfj 108 whip last nite, it is heavier at the bottom , about the same diamater at the last 2 feet, it comes as a whip and in a seperate package is the ferule to slip it into. i laid it down on the sidewalk and put it in the ferrule all the way till it bottomed out, measured it. 108 exactly. screwed it on the ball mount and ran with it today back and forth to work. got good reports, when i got home tonight i hooked up the swr meter. 1.1, i am happy with this antenna. no matter what with this length of antenna i am going to have some bending on the highway, not near as bad as with the rat shack ss antenna, i tied fishing line a couple of feet from the top of the antenna and hooked it up to the loop on my hood. jeep wrangler. its nice looking , cleaner with out the spring i would recommend this antenna. its good with a little fire in the wire to.

radio shack has the 102 fiberglass whip, they keep them in the back
so you will have to ask the store clerk and tell him they are with the 102 ss whips so he dosent go over to the cell phones and start looking. jim

the 7 foot whip is what i have been using for a while with good results. it dosent bend as much but does a little, i am old fashioned and want to see the old 108 stainless on the back, plus you cant beat them for performance,,, jim

thanks for the reply, i have the jeep compltely bonded, doors, hood tailgate, body to frame, its bonded everywhere, its the radio shack 102 that is flimsy and bends easy at highway spped, i used a 6 inch spacer i made and the antenna bends in half at 65 with no spring, i am hoping the mfj 108 is stronger, it is my understanding that at 108 inches the antenna is 1/4 wave and resonant on 11 meters, i have had very low swr with 108 on ball mount on this vehicle. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, jim

i am wondering if maybe i could insert the antenna inside pvc water pipe to stiffen it or something similar, would it hurt its performance?

hi all, i just purchased a 108 whip from mfj. i dont have it yet but expect it soon, thought it might be better without having to use the spring as it is 108 inches by itself, i am putting it on a jeep wrangler , already have a ball mount above rear left tailight. i am hoping it dosent bend as much going down the road as the radio shack whip does, has anyone here used the 108 mfj whip? ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, jim
